  • Gray Trim Paint Code - Door Handle etc color

For restoration purposes..the closet thing I've found to the outside Gray Trim on 85, 85.5, ans 86 models is this....

    PPG #DDL 33717

84 trim was a semi gloss black.

Or - you can take a sample of your trim that was not exposed to the sun and have your painter custom mix a matching color for you.

Door Handles - Key locks - Window Wipers are Semi Gloss Black.

    Thank you!

What kind of store would have that gray paint?

(I plan on repainting the trim and door locks this spring)

You'd want to find an auto paint supplier that sells PPG products.
      64 Mercury Comet - 289ci
      86 Mustang SVO - Sold
      99 Honda Superhawk - 996cc V-Twin

More than you wanted to know about DDL 33717

The DDL line of paint is very hard or impossible to get and illegal to use in many states.
The sort of good news is that you can get the same color # in the DCC line of paint. Just go to an auto body paint supply jobber that carries the PPG brand of paint and ask for DCC33717 . What you will get is 3 containers. The first will be the DCC acrylic urethane. The second will be DCX61 hardener and the third will be a DT series reducer, usually DT870. The exact reducer used depends on the temperature in the paint booth. Faster evaporating reducers are used for low temps and slower evap. for high temps.
The DCX61 hardener contains isocyanates. ISOCYANATES ARE DEADLY. In 1984, over 2,000 people were killed in Bhopal, India after an accident at a Union Carbide plant released isocyanate. Because of this, using a professional spray booth, HVLP spray gun and a supplied air respirator is a very good idea. You might want to prep the parts and buy the paint yourself and have a body shop do the actual painting for you. If you do, be sure that the body shop painter mixes the paint in the proper proportions. The DCC33717 is a special low gloss color. It is mixed at 6:2:1 (DCCTCX) instead of the normal 4:2:1 ratio.

I was told that Paul with SVPU has the charcoal paint for the trim in a spray can.

so funny that Ford painted them all from 1985, 85.5, and 86 that way. it's your car ... no one says you have to put it back to the factory paint scheme. if you dont like the look of it being gray .. paint it black.

On a 86 what is gray and what is black? Is the following gray: Bumper trim, trim around glass, trim around door, window frame of doors, cowl, bi-wing, spoiler, lower portion of spats, trim panel under doors? Black: wipers, door handles, locks.
