  • Power steering rack for my 85.5

Hi guys, installing a new Lares 16191 power steering rack into my 85.5. Having trouble matching the hose ends to the rack. Anyone else use his rack in the past? Did you need to change the original hoses or did the originals work? I did order a Sunsong 3401304 (2.3 turbo) and a Gates 358900 (5.0) pressure hoses just in case, but the ends seem different..

    Thanks!

Lares said in their advertising they needed the TRW style hoses. The rack I got from them worked with the Ford hoses. When I called the tech line for Lare's he told me the ad was a typo and the stock Ford rack hoses fit. All that said if the early racks needed the TRW maybe you have an early rack. The 84 racks were TRW. Try putting the plastic plugs that came with the rack in your old one for reference.

All is good now. Got the rack with the aftermarket hoses to fit, the fittings and ends just looked completely different than the originals, but they do work fine. Installed new outer tie rods, offset rack mount bushings and a m.m. solid steering shaft. Alignment happening next. Car drove great, no more wandering at all . This rack does steer a little lighter, a little less turning radius possibly, but works fine. I have kept the original worn out unit from the car, in case I ever need to have it rebuilt for whatever reason, but I don't currently see the need.

Funny, they told me the exact same thing when I called with that concern. They seem to be okay with fielding calls regarding that 'typo'. Sad they don't fix it!
