  • Hose for Charcoal Canister

What hose is correct to connect the charcoal canister to the skinny black plastic line that goes to the tank?

  • #2
IIRC it has a rubber end (boot) on the end of the plastic to connect to the nipple on the can.

Yes, Eric that part I got but wondering what kind of hose is the rubber one? vacuum hose, fuel hose, some kind of magic hose...LOL

It's moving fuel vapors around, so I'd recommend fuel hose. You can probably get away with vacuum hose, since it's fuel vapor vs. liquid fuel, but fuel hose would probably last longer.

The one thats ~ 3/8" - 1/2" ID that goes to the air box?? IIRC oe is a molded hose, which I'm sure was most likely fuel rated. Rubber fuel line or some silicone hose of appropriate diameter would be fine.

          I'm seeing if I have a diagram/pic somewhere...

I can't find a decent pic of that corner of a "stock" engine bay... Or even a 2.3.. I'll look at a couple of cans I have at home. I know my 85.5 has no can. The can hookups are the "same" per se. Just the "intake" source hookup is obviously not on top of the engine air cleaner. (V6/8)

Found one!! I circled the formed hose, it comes from the larger nipple on can. and goes to the plastic fitting/nipple in the lower half of air cleaner box. Blue points to the hose itself. Our cars have a mushroom cap on both chambers to vent. Some V8 of the era actually stuck a solenoid in one.

OH! I used some ~1" ID 'heat riser' tubing for that one. It's very low vacuum and vapor. It's corrugated, like the stuff they use for heat riser tubes from the exhaust manifold to the air cleaner snorkel, just smaller diameter. I'll try to get a picture this evening, or tomorrow, if no one pops up with it before.

Yep I've seen that too. I think my old 85 TC used it for the tubing.

                    I believe this is it:

                    https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c...on+hose&pos=10

The Standard brand hose has a natural finish, while the Gates brand, I believe, has a flat black finish. The black finish one is the one I got for our 86.

EDIT: Correction! Just went out to have a closer look. The hose I got had a natural finish. I painted it flat black to match the old hose that was removed a bit ago. Picture to follow.

Here's the picture. Pardon the filth. I thought the canister was cleaned before I put it back on the car. Obviously, I have work to do when I get back under there to replace the rack.

The hose I was originally asking about is the skinny hose that goes back to the gas tank. The rubber hose connects the skinny nipple form the canister to a hard plastic hose that goes into the fender. I was able to get it hooked back up, it was not connected and I thought the rubber hose was short
