  • 1986 O2 Sensor

So I'm in the process of building a custom exhaust on my 1986 and ran into a problem which is that I can't get the o2 sensor out of the exhaust outlet elbow. I have another elbow that I'm going to modify to make a custom 3" downpipe, and the original plan was to reuse the old o2 sensor. Rather than mess with it anymore, I was just going to buy a new o2 sensor, but all the ones I'm seeing are 3 wire, not 1 wire. The other problem is that the connector for the o2 sensor is stuck together and I can't get it apart. So here are my questions.

1- anyone know where to get a new single wire o2 sensor that's correct for an 86? So far I've found NOS (emphasis on the OLD part) on Ebay, and that's it.
2- Is there anything special I need to look for with a new o2 sensor or will any single wire one work?
3- Is there any resistor or anything in the connector or can I just cut the old connector and replace it with something like a weatherpack?

    Thanks for your help

Searching for '1 wire oxygen sensor' turns up several unheated O2 sensors. I have no clue if they all work in the same range, or not.

I remember having to change an O2 sensor on our '96 Impala SS. I could not get the sensor to break loose. Even after hosing the thing down with liquid wrench-type chemicals and letting it sit a few days. I ended up putting a 6-point boxed end wrench on it and then using the pressure from a floor jack. I almost had the suspension to full extension before the ->BANG!<- of it finally breaking lose. Anti-seize went on the new one before it went on.

Thanks for the input, I actually just learned some stuff prior to gaboy responding. The first is that replacements are available. I haven't found either a ford or motorcraft, but there are options. However, when you input 1986 SVO into the vehicles, you get all 3 wire sensors, or most. I didn't click on every single one so one may have slipped by. If you enter a 1986 LX or, NA 2.3L though, you get options from walker, bosch, and NTK to name a few. So the more "name brand" options now that it seems the ford and motorcraft ones are no more. And they have the correct plug on them as well.

Also no cliffhanger, I did finally get the connector apart. So that at least won't be holding me up. 02 sensor still seems to be permanently part of the elbow, but I'll deal with that later if I even have to.

Went through this a couple of months ago with my 86. The only place most parts lists have the correct part is the 83 GT turbo. For some reason every other Mustang 2.3t lists a 3 wire sensor. That said a 4 wire sensor is a bit improvement for our cars. First sensors were single wire, signal only. Then they added a heater which made it 3 wires. The fourth wire is for a signal ground, which is frequently an issue with our car as the EEC ground for the O2 is the typically orange wire that goes on the stud that holds the inlet elbow on the front of the turbo. This leaves far too many bolted connections between the O2 sensor and the ground.
