  • Need a new exhaust

I need a new exhaust system in my 86 svo. The current system is a Custom 3" downpipe, into a 3" in, 3" out muffler, and exits out the drivers side in front of the rear tire. Very much free flowing and doesn't hold anything back. Great for power but way too loud.

I need to install a Cat, 3" Y-pipe to 2-1/2" all the way out the back.

Any suggestions on the Cat? Y-pipe? Cat back system?

Will a Muffler shop be able to make a decent Y-pipe for me?

    Thanks

Why not just look at the muffler? I just got a full stainless 3" over the axle with a magnaflow and it's not bad at all. Maybe it's the exit location?

Yes the location to my left ear is close, but believe me when I say it is loud. I need to install a Cat for smog purposes here in California, but I want the least restrictive one I can get.
I'm unsure about 2-1/2" compared to 3" cat back, but I don't want to deal with clunking exhaust pipes. I don't think the dual 2.5" will hurt that much. I absolutely need to make the car a little more respectable, noise wise. I'm not 18 years old anymore and the suits in my "hood" will look at me funny if I leave it like it is.

I didnt think the sound of an SVO could ever draw attention like a V-8 or motorcycle can.

Thanks Mike, your the answer man. Reading some posts in the last hour, I found that Magnaflow mufflers should be the way to go. Now I know what Cat to get. I do want dual exhausts, and if I could find the part # for a set of 2.5" in/out magnaflows, I would be set.

Stinger makes a 3" to 2.5" dual y-pipe and a set of 2.5" SS tail pipes to finish it off.

Here's a picture of the bottom of my 3" down pipe a second bung is already welded in. There is a single wire O2 sensor and Bung at the top as well.

Pretty dirty compared to my last SVO.

Greg, I think that some of the mustang vendors around the country sell 2 1/2" cat back packages for a V6 Mustang that include a Y-pipe. Still mods to perform, but all the parts needed.

None of the aftermarket dual exhaust packages include different length mufflers as it came from the manufacturer. Resonance is noticeably different with the 14" and 18" versus two 14's.

Check with your local Midas Muffler Shop. I believe they have a stock part number for the Y-pipe. My local shop had one 3 years ago!

                      exhaust

walker exhaust systems had and still has(i think) complete exhaust systems for svo to include 86.

i had my local muffler shop make my y pipe. i run 3"dp to cat, to dual 2.5" pipe all the way to the rear. its a little louder since i took the mufflers off, but nothing earth shattering.

my Veedub is louder with just a spintech muffler installed. atleast for anything over idle.

Has that location been a problem with road debri or road kill?

True, but I don't think the y-pipe will be a 3" to dual 2.5". I looking for something that will work effectively at the split.

Maybe the cat back will work here, but I have a feeling it's going to depend on the y-pipe. Does Walker make a 2.5" Stainless Steel tailpipes?

Does anyone know which company makes a 2.5" tailpipe section that appears close to original?
