  • NOT HAPPY! ! ! Cracked Bob's Log Header

Well, Getting ready to put a brand new 86 cam back in my 86 SVO. Wanted to do a compression check. Things haven't felt up to par lately. Compression was awesome. HOWEVER, looked at the header between #2 and #3 and found a crack thru the weld that goesaround the header. The crack was about 3/4 the way around it. After removing the header and turbo you can actually see light thru the crack. THANK GOD I still have my uncracked mildly ported E6 laying around. Gonna get it back together over the weekend. I e-mailed Bob today. I want to talk to him about this cracked header. NOT happy having to do a manifold swap when I was just gonna do a cam swap. Will post pictures later.....

Update: Bob called. Header is getting taken care of.

Mine did the same thing. He got a hold of some bad metal that would crystalize under high temperatures in one of his batches. I let him know, and sent it off to him and he repaired it for me. He returned it uncoated, though. I used that opportunity to get a shiny and purdy ceramic coating. Just send him an Email and I'm sure he'll fix you up. As Mike stated, he recently had heart bypass surgury, so don't be in a hurry and give him some time. Look on the bright side, at least you have something that you can use while waiting for the repair.

Mike: I have no idea what exhaust gas temps have been. I have a T3/T4. I am putting a 3" downpipe on Monday and Magnaflow Mufflers to 2 1/2" tailpipes. This should keep temps down.

Well I was really NOT looking forward to having to swap manifolds. AND I am not going to put it back on after the repair. I will be putting it up for sale after I get it back. It isn't worth the trouble to take it off again. My E6 manifold is ported. SO, I think I will just stick with that.

The metal on the Log DOES look like it crystalized. I am attaching pictures here.

Is that a white stain around the crack? That usually indicates a lean condition and/or a crack in the head allowing water into the combustion chamber. Are you still running stock injectors with the big turbo?

i would get the log fixed, set it up for a egt sensor and put it back on. IMO NO PORTED E6 is even close to a bobs log.
i loved my bobs log unitl i made a deal for a MD header. Now i really like the MD header except for the exhaust note. its a wee bit higher in pitch than before.

Thats how mine looked. Shoot Bob a PM, he'll fix you up. Mine had those white stains, too, but that was because I was running race gas.

I have to agree with caroth here. Have you been losing coolant or blowing it out?

Were you running the Y-brace to support the turbo?

also, from the first and second pics, it looks like there might be 2 cracks. There is another white spot close to where the flange welds to the log.

I am running 35# injectors and a 255 in tank pump with a Kirbin adjustable regulator, BUT, I am only running around 10-12lbs of boost daily driving. I have the BCS disconnected and the boost sensor for the fuel pump is jumpered to run 12V all the time. I am not running a Y-brace to support the turbo. Any pics of this Y-brace? I have been loosing a little coolant, HOWEVER I pulled the plugs and there are no signs of it on them. I also did a compression test and all 4 were between 165 and 175. I uncapped the radiator and brought each cylinder to TDC with the valves closed. Blew air into each cylinder and no bubbles out of the radiator. So it looks like there is a leak in the cylinders.

One big thing I have noticed, With the boost set to 10-12#'s timing set to 10* (with the spout disconnected), if I disconnect the knock sensor, the car detonates like a champ as soon as the boost comes in. I am really at a loss on this. I hear about everyone disconnecting the knock sensors but mine goes straight to detonation if I try that.

                    H E L P ! ! ! ! !

Here is my complete setup if this will help:

                      -.030 bottom end
                      -Cometic Head Gasket
                      -Ported Big Valve head
                      -New Factor 86 Cam
                      -Now Ported Factory E6 Manifold
-T3/T4 Hybrid from Charlie at Evergreen
                      -35# Injectors
                      -Walbro 255 Intank Pump
                      -Kirbin Regulator
-Racer Walsh Adjustable Round Tooth Cam Sprocket set at 0
-Turbo Coupe intercooler w/ BP Valve
                      -Stock throttle Body
-Timing at 10* w/ spout disconnected

I think that is about it. Did I leave anything out? This car has just never really impressed me. The parts I have I would think this thing would run alot stronger. I run 93 pump gas all the time and the fuel switch is set to premium.

                        here's the Y brace

                        shown in GREY

Also, without this Y-brace, the stock E6 will crack pretty quickly.

Make sure you use all the bolts!
