  • Parking brake cables..

while doing other stuff I decided to replace those old worn out parking brake cables.

I purchased from 50resto and of course you need two of them. These are SVO specific as far as I know. the part numbers are different for regular Mustangs.

The rear caliper lever that attaches to the parking brake cables is a slitted design where the cable goes around it, a pin goes through it and you secure with a cotter type pin. Everyone should know what I'm talking about hopefully.

On the new cables the part that fits over the rear levers is a much nicer peice and actually thicker than the oem ones. Now the pin doesn't fit through to secure it. I'll have to hit the parts stores tomorrow and see if they have longer ones.

I'll snap pictures so you know what I'm talking about. It was a pain getting the ends onto the brake handle T bar, but eventually I got it. All in all they are high quality and heavy duty peices and will work for a long time providing I can find a pin for the rear levers.

    pics coming soon...

pictures attached.. anyone know where I can get a longer pin to fit through the new cable slot there? the hole is also small so I had to drill it out a bit to get it to fit

The raybestos part is the onlyone that fits. Trust me I know. But if you have a local NAPA then you are in luck because guess who makes their brake cables?

If you cant find them I think I know a vender that hast a few setrs in stock

well, I called 50resto and said to just return them..I was like -are you still going to sell them even though they won't work?? They said they couldn't help me there..figures.

Since I have them installed already save for this part I decided to look around for something that would work. I ended up at Lowes of all places and found a replacement pin. I'll snap some pics shortly.

Just a reminder..DON'T buy this part from 50resto or the maker SSBC..the clevis that hook onto the brake lever in the rear are three times as big as the OEM ones. Get them from rockauto or forced4.

where did you get those? I found some at lowes similar, but don't have all the holes in them.

it's not the company it was a few years ago, that gave personal service, that's for sure.

well..finally had time to adjust the brake cables.. obviously the wrong cables because I snapped the ring on the brake handle.. the springs on teh cable are too tight. I'll have to order the AC Delco ones and hopefully someone has them locally. it was under 90 degrees today so I did a bunch of things, but that won't last.

wow, what a difference the correct part makes. good lord!!.. I ordered the raybestos cables that many mentioned in here and it took less than an hour to install them and they engage the brakes with the first pull of the handle.

the ones I purchased from 50resto I now have to argue with them....for the record, they said many SVO owners have purchased those cables and they work fine. I have to disagree.. you are all right here and know which ones are the rights ones. Those cables were too short and the springs were SUPER tight on them.

tomorrow or monday I'll have to battle with them about it.
