  • West Coast People Driving Out?

Are any of you guys from the West coast planning on driving out? I owe Mike / 82 Tops some rear window louvers from the nasty 86 LX that I have sitting in my driveway taking up space.

I started to box them up several times but I don't think they would survive a trip by UPS or Fed-X. If they were to get bent they would be useless and impossible to fix / repair.

I'd like to get somebody from my area to take them up to the reunion and then pass them off to go West. I also need to pass along the red dash pad to Joe T.

If anybody else has parts that need to go between coasts feel free to hijack this thread.

Not saying for sure at the moment, but if I do drive out, I would need someone to help with the driving chores. Both ways of course. Anyone interested?

It pays in red crayons - unbroken. The car would sure be slow with all three of us heavy weights. But it sure would be fun. Maybe we should rent a motor home and tow the SVO? Now - that would FUN - and we could probably include Chris, a few Pat's, Mitch, and whom ever else we could fit in the motor home.

However, my real plan is to drive across country in my SVO before I get too old.

              How old is too old?

Hmm... a motorhome road trip? That could be interesting. We can beat that idea around at Buttonwillow.

How many SVOs can be towed with a motorhome? Yes, at the same time.
It depends on the motorhome and the trailer (Toy Box?). I bet there are a few VARA guys who are set up to haul four vintage cars behind theirs.

                  Ken,
This is a bit off topic but...I know for a fact that USPS are much more gentle with their packages then UPS. I use to sell a lot on eBay, UPS employee me this once and stated it was their conveyor belts would destroy my PS2 since my box was so poorly packed.

Have you tried lots of bubble wrap/packing peanuts in between each box?

Yeah thats cause they use FedEx to send thier packages.

I'm something of a professional boxing / packaging guy from experience at my old job. These louvers just make me nervous looking at them. I have heavy weight double wall boxes, jute carpet padding, bubble pack, and peanuts at my disposal.

These louvers are fairly light weight aluminum and what I would call "concave" in both directions. If any weight is placed on them when flat they will crush and be useless. They can also easily "rack" if the package is dropped on a corner when standing on edge.

If I could get a guarantee that they would be shipped as a "top load only" freight from the carrier I might feel better / safer. That is almost impossible to maintain as most packages get transferred at least twice during transit.

Most carriers don't care and if the package "fits" a void in the container it gets stuffed in there and forgotten. I've dealt with literally millions of dollars in damaged freight over the years. Labels like Fragile or This End Up are going to get the opposite treatment everytime.

It will also have to go as oversize and that is where freight carriers really ream out the shipper $$$. I shipped a lower spoiler some years ago by UPS oversize and the freight was $139

I'll be driving out to the reunion, maybe with a motorhome and a trailer (need to ask pops for the motorhome). If not go on the rv, then I'll still be driving out in either the svo or take a truck and trailer. One thing for sure is that I WILL NOT miss the reunion this year like I missed last years. The fiancee has already oked this and is fine with me going on another road trip. I will update the rv situation when I know for sure. Jason Villeneuve
