  • Sunday Auto-X??

Looks like their auto-x is being held Sunday from 9am-12pm under the banner of "Autocross Real Street Shootout". It is 'free' and on a first-come, first-served basis with signup starting Friday morning. I need to toss my helmet into the trip bag! I know it won't be as much as a typical SCCA auto-x, but why not, right? Who else is going to join in?

Here is the info from the site:

See What Your Car Can Do on the Carlisle Course

There is a NEW day and time for the Autocross Real Street Shootout in 2024! The contest will be taking place SUNDAY at 9AM. It will begin with check-in followed by a driver's meeting and tech inspection. This FREE activity is being supported by Gateway Classic Mustang. It's fast, it's furious and it's fun!

If you think you and your car have what it takes to compete in the shootout, signup for the contest at Guest Services starting on Friday. This activity is a first come, first serve basis, so be sure to sign-up when you get here! The top three finishers will receive a trophy and will each get a cash payout! If you want to have some fun on the track, this is your chance…and it’s FREE!!

Participants must have a registered (and street legal) car on the Ford Nationals NPD Showfield, be 18 years of age or older and have a valid license and insurance. Refer to the Event Guide for the official time (published two weeks prior to the event). Participants are REQUIRED to bring their own helmets for safety. You will be unable to participate if you don't have one.

Approved helmets are REQUIRED. Helmets must have one of the following SNELL FOUNDATION certifications: “SA2020, SA2015, SA2010* & SAH2010*; or M2020, M2015, M2010*; or EA2016. Helmets must have the original Snell certification labels affixed. A SNELL foundation rating of “K” (karting) is NOT allowed at this event. A helmet with DOT approval is NOT sufficient without also having one of the SNELL certifications listed above. *NOTE: Helmets with Snell “SA2010”, SAH2010”, or “M2010” certification must have an original manufacture date sticker affixed with a manufacture date less than ten (10) years old.

*Due to safety concerns, stock height SUVS and trucks may be excluded from the contest.

I have run with the Gateway group out in Sturgis. They ran a good show out there but it was an all day event. The Gateway mustangs were out giving rides all day the day before. No one else could drive the track till the event. Not a fair playing field. Still fun.

Where are they having it? I remember when were were discussing the planning of the reunion, I found the past ones were held in the back corner of the grounds next to the turnpike in the hollow and calling it an "autocross" (more of a gocart track) was a big stretch for real car people. I found every time they tout this "awesome" autocross event, it's in that back corner. The average show attendee isn't there for making turns, most are trophy whores, into making noise with horrible sounding straight exhaust (usually S197/550/650 crowd), and straight line around here. I'm honestly surprised they've been having it on grounds the past several years as the show has gotten that huge. And it's a bit difficult to even figure out where do have a "real" one as the area is so congested with show attendees and general traiffic. I took the '10 a few years ago and they were literally puttting cars wherever they could saturday. I came back to an 07 next to me in the middle of '10 section.

I have no idea, will look at the show layout map in the registration pack again tonight when I get home to see if they had an area called out. I am sure it won't be a 'regular' auto-x course, likely something more like a GoodGuys event track to go out and scoot around. The fact that it is being held on Sunday (i.e.- post show fields) and that the auto-x starts at 9am and that Sunday's Carlisle schedule is only till12pm, I am hoping it won't be an 'all day' kind of thing.

Honestly, I am just hoping to get out on some asphalt for some fun, nothing serious. We will see how this compares to the Sturgis auto-x, since it has the same group organizing it.

Auto-x will be by the turnpike. Look at it on a Google map. They've kept the same spot for years. There was a place where people would do a drag race but, not exactly sure where it was. The N.A.T.O. guys had a small shoot out the one year. I heard the track wasn't that great then.
