I have a full face SNELL approved motorcycle helmet. Does this meet helmet requirements, or is there an automotive rating for helmets, too?

Not the same. Yes, there are autoracing Snell requirements that are different.

My helmet is not only old, its out of date and beat to heck. I need to protect what little I have left. Who has the best deals on helmets and what do you have?

            I use a motorcycle helmet

I only autocross at the reunion, but I've always used a motorcycle helmet. Mine is Snell M 2000 rated. If I'm not mistaken, the only difference between the Snell SA and the Snell M rating is the SA rated helmet has a fire retardent liner as the M rated helmet doesn't.

The way it was explained to me was that the auto helmets were designed to take impacts from small areas like roll bars and the motorcycle helmets were for broader areas like auto hoods and pavment. The theory is the harder shell of auto hemets takes the sharp impact saving your skull while the m series spreads the impact load over a larger area increasing energie absorbtion as much as possible. Which is not an option in a car!

It all really depends on the manufacturer as to the performance of the helmet. At least a couple manufacturers state that their M rated helmets are just SA helmets w/o the fire retardent liner material, since they don't believe that they should be different. Do your research and ask questions.

You will need a Snell2000 or better helmet for the autox - open face or full face. "M" Class helmet is OK. If this changes - we'll post something.

Motorcycle helmets do not require the fire retardant rating but they do require a larger eyeport then Snell or DOT.

                    They also look much better...

Yes, that's my old CBR900RR on VIR South. Unfortunately I don't have any experience with 4 wheeled vehicles. I may open the door and stick my knee out when we autocross so it feels a little more familiar.

BTW, motorcycles are MUCH easier then cars to set up for the track. On the flip side, drifting is a lot less fun.
