  • Power steering pressure hose replacement: which hose will fit?

Is the pressure hose hard to come by for a 1986 SVO power steering? Looking online at Autozone and Advance auto parts websites, they don't offer the hose for my car, but I found one post here where it looks like someone used a hose from a NA 2.3L Mustang, changed the bend at the end a little, and it worked. I was wondering if anyone else here has tried this same thing.

    Thanks!!

Try your local NAPA store. The one here makes high pressure hoses. All you have to do is take your old hose and they will make a new hose using the old ends. This may be a local thing, but it won't hurt to try.

I've used that hose on my '84 (different rack than an 86 so maybe others could comment if there's any difference). It worked just fine and it's still in the car with no problems. The hose is slightly longer and I used a wire tie to keep the hose from rubbing on the sway bar. As I remember, I had to unbolt the steering rack mount bolts and the steering coupler so that I could slide the rack forward to get at the lower hose mounting nut. Many times the leak is just a bad O-Ring. Clean everything up and verify whether it's the hose or the O-Ring that's leaking. That could save you some hassles.

        Thanks

Thanks for the advice, guys. Perry that's a good idea getting the hose replaced using the old ends, but the problem is with my old ends: when I removed the pressure hose from the rack a while ago, it was so rusty that the tube started to twist at the fitting. I got it off and after repainting my engine compartment I reinstalled it and it's working now, but I noticed the tube bends really easily by the fitting so I don't trust it. My main concern of ordering a NA 2.3L power steering hose was if the fitting wouldn't thread into the rack. It sounds like it will so I'll order up a hose. i'll let you know how it turns out!

mr. Dryden. The power steering hoses were made using standard fittings that can be bought in numerous places. If you don't trust your present hoses, go to a shop that can make hoses, match up the ends, match up the metal lines and have the shop make you a duplicate. It is not rocket science, althought some people would like for you to believe that it is. Do them in stainless and braided lines and they will look much better than your originals and probably not cost as much as some supposedly factory stuff.
Don't get stuck on the easy stuff, hoses are a piece of cake, some of the svo specific parts are a different matter. Just my two cents worth, and it is not worth much, I know. Ralph

I found the new hose at autozone or advance... Can't remember which one right now... Their websites are okay for some stuff. I was their getting stuff for my ranger and inquired about the hose and they had it.
