  • Ball Joint Question

Heard rumor that the front lower ball joints aren't replaceable. Is there any truth to this. The dust boots are badly beat and the ball joints need to be replaced. HELP ! ! !

    Your options are --

Used control arm (not the same as standard mustang)
D&D control arms (could be a wait involved)
a guy in CA that cuts the old joint out, and replaces it.

if the joints are good, and only the boots are trashed, you can replace just the boots. SVP has replacment boots.

I had a boot that was trashed on my car, but the joint itself was fine.

JC Performance in Grover Beach, CA (near San Luis Obispo)at www.jcperformance.com (look under the "what's new" heading) is the outfit that machines SVO lower front control arms to take replaceable ball joints. ($129.95 each) There exists controversy as to whether enough "meat" is left at the end of the control arm after this operation for strength and safety. I have no experience with these and offer no opinion in the matter. According to info on their website, they will be available October 2003. From time to time I'm up in that area. Maybe someday I'll have time to stop by and check them out.

D & D Performance in Valencia, CA (north of LA) has been working with Chris Roth at Turboford.org for about 2 years to develop a tubular SVO arm with replaceable ball joints. It appears that this project is ever ongoing.

Option #3 is to find a set of good used arms or NO$ arms.

Option #4 is to convert to SN-95 arms, struts, brakes & spindles. Several folks have done this. I'm not one of them.
