  • Rear Brakes

I'm trying to replace my rear brake pads and I can't get the calipers to compress so I can put on the new pads. Is there a trick, are they both seized up or can I take them off and put them in a vise to compress them.
Also was wondering if the metal brake sleeves that replace the rubber one can also be used in the backhttp://www.maximummotorsports.com/brakes-asp.asp.

    Hello, and welcome.

The rear calipers have to be screwed back in due to the parking brake mechanism inside the piston. That's why the dimples are on the piston (for you to use a tool to tirn the pistons clockwise to retract them). Consult the factory shop manual for all the specifics, because if you turn them in too far, they'll become rebuildable cores.

        Tool

        Todd,
I picked one up a few months ago at AutoZone. Most large chain parts stores should carry it, looks sort of like a metal die (as in dice) with small projections ( the politically incorrect would call them "tits" ) on each side. Only cost about 6 or 7 bucks.

Found one at the fifth auto parts store I went to. Everyone was sold out. I got the brakes all fixed except for the rubber caliper pin sleeves for the rear. I have metal ones for the front on the way but can't find ones for the rear. Any suggestions?

                Rear Disc Brake Hardware Kit

The 4 RUBBER caliper pin sleeves are available in the rear disc brake hardware kit for a 1984-1989 Lincoln Mark VII. These are the replacement sleeves for the stock parts. It also includes 2 new stainless steel anti rattle springs for the rear pads. It is available at Autozone as a Brakeware H5642 for $13.99.

Hey Rich, I ordered my metal sleeves from maximummotorsports, and I ordered two sets for front and rear. They called me the next day and said they were different, that I could only use them on the front. I'm about to put them on so I'll know more after that

                    rear brake pad replacement

hey i just replaced my rear rotors and pads..the trick to compressing the pistion is to ..remove the parking brake bolt and lever...then use a large cresent wrench and turn the large nut on the back of the caliper only 1/2 a turn to losen it no more this allows you to compress the caliper ..i used a small c clamp ..do not turn the large nut any farther then 1/2 a turn ..after you compress the piston and replace the pads turn the large nut back to tighten it ..this info is also in a Haynes repair manual..hope it helps fran

                      Todd,
Yeah, let me know about that, because that's where I got mine as well. I just told them to send me what I needed. I may be assuming that they are they same...haven't looked yet.

Hey Rich, I changed those rear brakes (pads, caliper pin sleeves, and spring clip) and they are totally different from the front. At least mine were. The a-zone # worked great and had just what I needed for the rear.
