  • Inner Tie rods shot

I took my car in to a suspension shop to check the front end out due to wandering on the interstate and a scarey realization that the car doesnt handle as well as before and somethin is NOT right! They just called and said new shocks and inner tie rods, shocks were $135 a piece and tie rods were $65 a piece. I called them back and told them to NOT do anything and that I would look into my own parts etc. Anyways, Im gonna put some cheaper shocks in until I can afford Konis and all I need are the tie rods. Is $65 per right or can I find them cheaper? If so, where? Thanks guys!

You can pick them up at your local parts store or you can get them both included with the front rack for ~$100 at Autozone or Advanced Auto.

Koni is the only manufacturer that still makes struts for SVO's. I think Gabriel makes a cartrge that fits inside the Koni housing. The parts store has inners for $20-30 each.

you can buy the inner tie-rods for $18 a side last time I had to replace one, at autozone.. as GAboy said -- you can buy the whole rack for about $100, which has them alread attached.

The rebuilt rack you need with the inner tie rods included is a Cardone 22-207. That's the easiest way to deal with the problem!

If your rack is not leaking, I would not change it out. Even though you will get the part # you need, chances are the steering effort will be way too light. I have worked in the parts industry for over 15 years and have bought or had friends buy rebuilt racks from Moog and A-1 and most of them had steering efforts way to light. The last one I got was from Cardone and it steered like cr^p. 80's Town Car light. I even talked to their tech dept. to no avail. I ended up returning it and finding one from a wrecked LX with 27k miles for $30.

So your sayin I CANT replace the front shocks for cheap, I think Im gettin confused, lol. My rack seemed fine last time I was under it, but I will check again and see, definitely dont want town-car steering!!!! I gotta make a run to Oreillys or Autozone and see whats up, will front shocks from any other Fox fit?

Yep, only Koni makes new ones. Do a search for "SVO struts" you know where and you will find the Gabriel inserts.

i too am confused, 90lx86svo are you saying that gabrial cartraged fit in the koni struts? are they still adjustable? where did you read that? i have a set of koni struts that need a rebuild. i was going to put them up forsale as needing a rebuild but if i can rebuild them with new cartragdes it may be better for my sale

EDIT: posted at the same time thanks for the info 90lx86svo

They are not adjustable but they are cheap. Lon has them on his 85.5. I actually have a set of Tokico 5 ways from a non SVO on my 86. They are not quite long enough and I had to slot the spindle mounting holes on the strut because they are offset instead of parallel line non SVO struts.

Since yours is an 84 I would do the rack swap. I did it in mine and it made a big difference. 84's have a 20:1 ratio and 85.5-86 have a 15:1. Do a search on rack, there are a couple of other things you will need to do the swap.

I also think the 15:1 ratio is too quick. Especially at high speeds. Keep the rack you've got.
