  • FAQ: Replacing front control arms (with SN95 arms)

possible post for the FAQ section?

Replacing SVO front control arms with SN95 arms-

As many know, the SVO ball joints are not replaceable, and new arms are no longer available.
however, the SN95 ('94-'04) mustangs use control arms that are allmost ientical to the SVO arms with a few minor changes-
    1) the sway bar hole is further out by approx 1/2 inch (won't make much difference, just the end link will be on a little angle)

    2) the ball joint is a smaller size- this is remedied by using Maximum motorsports ball joint adapter "MMFCAB-10". see http://www.maximummotorsports.com. I got these for $35 for the pair.

    3) the SVO spindle mount is a little thicker than the SN95 spindle mount, so the nut doesn't go as far down the ball joint threads- I just zapped it on with an air gun and used thread locker- the SN95 nuts are cotter-pin-free anyway, so make ure to use the SN95 nuts as the threads on the SVO nuts are different.

    4) ride height- this is dictated by the distance between the spring pocket in the lower control arm and the k-member. After first installing the control arms, the ride height sat about 1/2-3/4 inch higher. this will probably settle after the spring seats correctly in the lower a-arm. (I wanted a little lift anyway- the Eibach springs sit a little low in the front for me).

benefits to this swap are many-
the SN95 a-arm is quite a bit lighter than the SVO a-arm.
the ball joint has an expected life of 250k+ miles. It is also a low friction ball joint (you can see when you get a pair).
the ball joints are relpaceable- you can choose to run Steedas X2 ball joint (for better a-arm placement) if you want.
they are everywhere- all a-arms were the same (except for hte cobra- they used a different rubber)
and the price- mine were free- they were sick of tripping over them in the garage. You should be able to pick up a pair for $50 or so.

total price for fixing the click-click-click? $40 ($35 for ball joint adapters + shipping). and a good days work.

as seen on another forum- "I picture someone asking a Ford engineer back in '92 or so "Can you make us a stamped steel arm that is exactly the same as the SVO fabricated arms?"

yes. 100% of everything else works. and if you deciede to go w/ SN95 spindles down the road, its 1 step easier

Um...how how do I keep the ball joint from spinning while I try to put the nut on over the spindle mount? Using an airgun, and she spins as fast as my gun. Can't seem to force the spindle down enough to hold it...

        Sorry for the duh question.

...this is weird. Was not expecting to find such a recent thread for this same topic.

i put my spindle and control arm in the vice upside down (clamping it on the spindle at the top strut hole). using a large 1/2 drive socket and a hammer i tapped the balljoint down it til was snug in the spindle. i also used a socket wrench to tighten the nut, not my impact wrench.

yup, thats how I did it. you have to force the balljoint into the spindle, then zap it w/ a gun. I use short fast blasts with the gun, seems to help.

I thank you guys for that followup. As it turns out... I'm study the thing and realize that there's just to much slop there. Start studying the directions and realize Motion Dynamics didn't include the required shims. Called them, the sales manager was very kind and didn't give me any, well you lost them, or must have damaged them type of crap. Checked things out, said they had a new guy, offered apologies and overnighted the shims to me. So I'm back in business and should get the car back on all 4's when I have some time this weekend. Thank you.

now whats up with the extra parts that MM says you should use when doing this change. reading their website, they say to use their coilover kit, then to use that, you need their camber plates.

                    Hey Phil,

It was nice meeting you at Knotts the other day.

Couple of questions about this swap:

Didn't the SN-95 arms change in '99 or was that just the spindle design?

Are the SVO tie-rods long enough for the SN-95 setup?

My local alignment guy has a set of front arms, brakes, and spindles off a '99+. I figure I can use the spindles and the PBR brakes on the 5.0 and use the arms on the SVO.

                    Thanks!

                    -Eric

Does anyone know if you can use a pair of Ford Racing M-3075-D front control arms to replace the stock SVO front control arms?

I read above the ball joint is a smaller size- this is remedied by using Maximum motorsports ball joint adapter "MMFCAB-10".

                      Thank you,
