  • Control arm bolts

Okay, I had a plethora of bolts when I installed my 8.8. I thought I was rather consistent when reassembling, but it appears that I might have made a mistake. There is considerable play in one of my upper control arms when the car is shaken.

I'm going to remove the bolt and see what the problem is, it's possible the bushing is shot, but I'm fairly certain that I inspected all of the bushing well enough. Does anyone have length measurements for the upper control arm bolts?

The drivers side is nice and tight while the passengers side is loose. I removed both bolts and they are identical, I swapped bolts and the issue didn't follow. I think my bushings are shot.

So...damn, time to replace control arm bushings.

I found the cheapest place by me was autozone, because I think the ford dealer wanted $50 a piece for a rubber bushing. Make sure to go with rubber bushings in the uppers.

you want to make sure the control arm hole isn't "wallered" out...

So, how do you guys replace the bushings? I've never done it and don't want to bust anything up.

Or you can try the old school way with drilling or burning them out.

Are poly uppers that harsh on the street? I can get a complete kit from Energy Suspension for about $80, but for a complete set of rubber would cost me about $140.

you can use polly in one end or the other of the uppers, but not both. They don't have enough give, and will cause some serious snap oversteer!

I do polly on the rear itself, and rubber against the car, so it's easier on the mounting points.

Yes, from my experience with them. My understanding of the rear suspension is that they also significantly increase the bind experienced in the rear suspension design. A two fold wammy!

I'm trying to find the most cost effective way to replace all the control arm bushings in the rear. I could probably buy the Energy Suspension kit and then get the frame to control arm rubber bushings at Autozone.

SVOeric, so you're running fully poly's in the back EXCEPT for the upper to axle?

Can you buy the individual bushings in poly from anywhere? Summit doesn't have them, only the kit.

motion dynamics has the full control arms, brand new for $75.

then just buy the rear-end side ...

Edit:: Motion D. sells the differential side for $34...
