won't stay in first

The SVO is almost done now and i have one question. when ever i have the car in first it will pop out when i let the clutch up and start to move. However when i was trying to pull the car back into the garage i was able to let the clutch up, but the car would not rev anthing above idle and had no power, just sort of held the car in place on the small slope and lip of the garage floor. Any one have any suggestion. I have played around with clutch cable tension and it seemed that more tension would help the problem, but it is still there.

do you by any chance have an after market shifter on it? sometimes if the stops are not adjust right you can't go into gear. If not, then the tranny probably needs work.

i believe that it it the original shifter. if the tranny needs work i would need to drop the tranny right the console and boot are already off the car. I haven't driven in 3rd or 5th yet. I will try to go that soon. I also wasn't sure if the lack of power would help to diagnose the tranny problem, since i think that they are directly related
