Transmission noise

On my way home from the reunion (84 1c) I heard what sounded like a noisy lifter coming from the engine as I turned down the tunes and rolled up the windows. I hadn't really remembered hearing this before but haven't driven the car on the freeway much the last couple of years. As I downshifted from 5th to 4th and lower gears this noise would go away, so now I figured it was transmission related rather than engine since if it was engine it would be there anytime the engine is running. It only makes this noise when the car is in 5th gear, any ideas what this could be???

Where exactly?

This is located on the outside of the transmission or do I get at it from inside the car under the shifter boot?? Thanks
