  • T5 help please

Can someone tell me how to get the top cover of my T5 back on? I'm having real difficulty figuring out how all the linkages are supposed to be oriented. Anyone have a photo of how the innards of the top cover are supposed to look?

If my memory serves me right it does take a bit of technique to get the cover off/on. To put back on, you have to get the shifter forks in line with the appropriate grooves in the top gear cluster and bring the cover down slightly offset to one side, then bring the cover over the align it to the top of the trans. There is something, can't think of what it exactly is, that hooks into the case, which requires the cover to be slid/aligned offset to the opening when it is removed/installed. This is a bit of a pain when installing with the new sealant sitting on the top lip of the trans. Practice with it dry first, then apply and final install. Here are a couple of pics, not the best, but may help and also an exploded view of the tranny. Good luck.

Thanks for the photos. My cover looks different inside. maybe something got shifted while it was off. I've read the tech manual and various sources but nothing fixes my issue.

In the photo it looks like the shifter arm assembly is inside the interlock plate but on mine it is not and it couldn't possibly fit inside. Regardless, it seems like the rail won't go far enough forward. The rail only barely fits inside the recess for it in the front of the housing. It looks like it should go in a good half inch more.

I'll get pictures of it on Friday and post them so hopefully someone can tell me if there is something wrong.

I fixed it. But I had to completely disassemble the cover to make it all go back together.

Your first picture is what clued me in on what needed to be done. Thanks for the help.

I got this one to replace the NWC '84 tranny in my '84. Nothing really wrong with it except that I went to 3.73's and the .86 OD in it really keeps the RPMs up when above 70mph. This one is a WC out of a turbo coupe so 5th (.79) is pretty close to the WC SVO's original .78. It will be nice to be under 3000 at 70mph.

I'm really hoping I didn't break it. I was working on it in top of a big plastic garbage can in the shop and left the room for a minute. It didn't have the tail shaft housing on it so it was pretty loose inside. When I came back the trash can had tipped over dropping the t5 on the tailshaft and shifter rail from about 3" up. Everything looked OK but I didn't pull the top cover back off to check the innards. It shifted through all the gears and turned freely so I guess it's ok.

We shall see. Maybe falling on the tail shaft just countered the damage done by UPS shipping it standing on the input shaft.

BTW that was supposed to be 3' not 3".

I kind of figured unless you have really short trash cans in your house.
But who know how far UPS dropped the trany .!!

UPS finds the highest altitude from which to drop customer shipments.

If a loading dock isn't high enough, they have airplanes.

The transit case was very clearly labeled "fragile" and "this side up" yet they shipped it with the input shaft down. When it arrived the input shaft was poking out of the bottom (side) of the box with concrete dust embedded in it.

                        You don't understand, do you?

"FRAGILE" targets your shipment for abuse.

"THIS SIDE UP" means just the oppopsite.

If you want to make a killing, just label anything "FRAGILE" and "THIS SIDE UP". Then just insure it for ten times it's cost.

There is this one NOS hood pad that keeps getting shipped cross country...

                        Never mind, that's another story.

Pat is right, they target big, heavy, fragile boxes for impromptu tests. When the trailers pull away from the docks at a UPS facility, they send a Bobcat outside to scrape up the boxes that didn't make it onto the trailers and dump them into a hopper to be sorted again.

I am glad a former tranny that I purchased was shipped freight and uncovered. It was simply strapped to a HD skid out and exposed, which prevented it from being stacked on top of and let everyone know in the shipping company know what it was (i.e.- no 'mystery' contents).
