I changed the one on my '84 with...believe it or not...another stock plastic quadrant! Pretty much the same experience as everyone else here except I didn't take my seat out and I think I ended up making a couple of trips to the chiropractor aftwards.

Later I bought the MM aluminum one to put in it but never got the nerve to attempt the swap.
Hoping to get on the track soon

        Preventitive Maintenance Idea

Has anyone put together a list of preventitive maintenance tasks? Items that might be considered (and that I have done are)

        Problem: Symptom
        - TRW Fan Relay Overheating, Fan doesn't work
        - Auxillary shaft/Dist. Gear Miss under boost over 3k rpm
        - Sticking brakes Burning brake smell, one brake dragging
        - Cleaning grounds Gauges not reading correctly
        - Headlight refinishing Fogging of lenses, condensation
        - Heater Core Water passenger side, fogging of windshield
        - SVO Wheel refinish Pitting, dull wheel finish
        - leather reconditioning Resoftening, crack repair, redye (seats, shifter, steering wheel)
        - Timing Belt
        - Performance Exhaust What to expect with (turbo housing bolts, wastegate, etc.)
        - Quadrant
        - AC
        - Power Steering
        -

I'm sure others may have more......and like the Quadrant, I'd like to know what is looming large so I can get to it now instead of being stuck somewhere.

Engineered obsolescence? Hell the thing made it over 20 years, that's not half bad.

I broke my operational plastic clutch quadrant out with a prybar, gloves and swearing last year.

I put in an aluminum MM one before it broke.

Didn't listen to the threads about dogbones and had mine fail last week without a spare on board though.

I just replaced my dogbone yesterday for the heck of it. The original one went into my console next to my spare TFI...

Unfortunately the MM clutch cable won't fit or I would have replaced it too. Bummer.

Sorry for the newbie question but what is MM? I need to buy a clutch cable because mine is worn out.

I did the quadrant replacement thing back in 1990 and I followed the shop manual. It took 4 1/2 hours to get the steering support shaft out of the car (remove steering, remove dash, etc), 5 minutes to snap the new quadrant back in, and 4 1/2 hours to get it back together. It might have been 4 1/2 hours total but I do remember that half-way through the job I called the Ford dealer and got an estimate of the job and the service guy said "Whew, parts: $11.23, labor: 4 1/2 hours, yikes!". So I knew that at least I was on the right track doing it the Ford way.

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread.

I bought the factory Q with the intention of keeping it original. Well, when I crawled under there and started butchering out the original plastic Q, and realizing how much work it would be to install a new one (lazy), I got a refund and bought an aluminum Q with a firewall adjustor, I LOVE IT.
