  • quadrant pawl removal - help

I finally crawled under the dash to begin removing the elusive factory quadrant. Got the main part off, but need some advice on the pawl, without lowering the steering column and the brake/clutch bracket.

I did search and noticed that some of you removed them with a hack saw, some with a Dremel tool. I started using small drill bits and it is slowly breaking apart.

Any advice is appreciated, the car is DOA until I get it off.

    thanks

I used long needle nose pliers.. the 12" ones, I can't remember if they were straight or angled, but they worked.

I easily got the clip off, just can't get the entire pawl off. Now I see why people put on an aluminum Q with an adjuster!

if I remember I used the angled needle nose and used it for leverage to pop it off. there's a post around here with more info.. I think Navy had some methods as well.

I has been many, many years since I changed mine, but I remember using a long screwdriver to pry it while finding the right position to put the pedal in to get it to slip off. I may have also 'tweaked' a support up there to gain some clearance as well.

Happy to report that I haved removed the pawl and installed the firewall adjustor today. It had 2 openings on the adjustor to add 2 sheet metal screws, but I could not get in there to drill the second hole, so I used the original hole and it fits snug. Also had to file the large hole a little to make it fit. Crawled under the dash to install the aluminum Q and realized I need to shim it. Did not have the right size shims, so will tackle that Friday after some bass fishing. Thanks for the replies! Oh, BTW, I bought the Ford Motorsports set.

I went with the Granatelli quadrant and it lines up and works great.

Congrats on the Granatelli, as long as it works for you. I am very pleased with my setup, goes easily into gear every time and shifts smooth.

I have read on here that some of the quadrants (UPR for one) do not line up properly and cause cable wear and fraying.

Agree, will still keep an eye on mine, just in case.
