  • 4.10 gears?

I pulled the tailshaft today to replace the rear seal and bushing and was thinking of changing out the speedo gear on the output shaft. The car will get an 8.8 next year with either 3.73 or 4.10. The T5 is an 86 WC SVO trans. Those with 4.10 how streetible is it? I have a set of MT DRs that are a little taller then stock, but I still we be driving it on the street on a limited basis.

The motor is mainly stock for now..but that won't last.

    4.10 too much?

very limited highway..maybe to the track..that's about it. My car has a black gear on the trans and a white on the speedo cable..do I even need to change the trans gear? Can I make the difference up by changing the speedo gear?

I had 4.55s in the front and rear of my AWD subaru..talk about launching!!

I have 4:10's in the 85.5 CP absolutly love them ! I don't feel it is what happens for 1st ,2nd, 3rd RATHER -makes 4th and 5th gear mach better for 50 to 80MPH passing on the highway !!!

P.S. BUT 4:10's don't work well with 84 gear sets ! Have made that mistake before!!

what Mark said. I had 4:10 in my 85.5 comp prep for several years and it was amazing. Granted, if youre going to take the car 1500 miles at 80 mph than it may be an issue. Around town driving was awesome

I too am another happy 4.10 gear owner with an 86. Sure, gears are shorter than stock, but not by that much. I am running taller than stock wheels (245/45R17's), so they work very well. Changing from the 3.73's moved my 3000rpm point in 5th gear down from ~72 to ~67mph. I still pull down ~26mpg on the hwy @ 75mph, though.

I did change my driven speedo gear, but can't remember to which one, it was many years ago. Since I will be changing my oil very soon, I can pull my cable to see which one I have if you really need it. Let me know.

I had 4.11's in my 85 When I bought it. Managed a best of 26mpg at 70mph. They got noisy and I replaced them with a 8.8" and 3.55's out of a turbo coupe. Managed to get 29.8mpg at 80mph after that. I like them a bit better as my stockish engine isn't really a high revving motor and it pulls much nicer keeping the revs in the middle of the torque curve. Took some getting used to though. The 4.11's were a bit better in town but I find myself shifting less with the 3.55's.

410's. Are you planning on running the 8th mile? Might run out of steam in the 1/4.

I doubt he will run out of steam, may be able to eek it out in 3rd depending on the trap speed. I regularly saw 4th at the top end when I used to run the 1/4, even with 26x8 E/T Drags.

Takes engine load to build boost. I fear that with 4.10s the load will not be there. I am leaning toward 3.73s at this point. The rears are MT DRs 275/40/17..if I remember correctly.

I bet 4.10s feel quicker..but 3.73s would put down better times.

Trust me, load will be there with either gear. I have never had any issues building boost with my 4.10's...controlling 1st gear wheel spin is another issue

Best bet is to determine your target MPH and RPM for the 1/4 and chose your gears/tires from there.

I have wonder the same with 4.10's. My 86 still has the stock gear and think more gear would help the car. Would the 4.10's b to much for DD duty. I do take the car to arkansas few time a yr about 1000 miles in a weekend and i am sure we will drive it to utah and michigan to see family. would they be to much or would 3.73's be a better gear?
