  • Another 8.8 swap question

I searched and really didn't find the answer to my question. I think my 7.5 finally gave up during this past Sunday's autocross. It is now leaking and is one wheel peeling coming out of the turns.

Anyways, I found a 8.8 out of a 99 Mustang GT and my question is will this axle fit under my SVO. The price is $50, it only comes with the housing and posi. Will my axles and brakes swap over to this 8.8 or do I have to find some new ones.

I'm not an expert on this but, I think you'll have to have a Fox housing to
replace your 86 7.5 SVO rear housing.

Ditto for me. If I had one in my grasp for $50 I'd take it; but I also need to know if there is a specific model of donor vehicle I should be looking for. I've been told that I only need the 8.8 housing and pumpkin and that the SVO axles and brakes are a direct swap-over. I just want to make sure before I buy anything.

I did find this on another forum, if it is true then the width "should" not be a problem. Tho I may need to roll the fender a little but.

        - 99 and newer Mustangs use a 59 7/8 inch wide rear axle.

        - Lincoln Mark7 LSC, SVO Mustang and Fox Body Saleens use a 59.5 inch wide rear axle.

I thought that all 79-04 solid rear axle Mustang's all used the same upper and lower control arms. With that I would think that the attatchments points are the same. I'm going to look at the axle on Thursday and any other inputs would be greatly appreciatted.

If nothing else I may just buy it and see if it works, if it does not then I'll just use the posi and sell the housing for $50 bucks.

the axle widths are only for the axles, the housing width is the same. gotta swap the brakes over anyway, so they line up with aforementioned axles. not sure if the spline count is different though.

upper / lowers shouldn't be an issue, but the quad shocks wont bolt on.

So the housing should just go right in correct. I'm pretty sure the posi is a 28 spline unit, but I'll find out for sure on Thursday.

I planned on deleting the quad shocks anyways when I install a MM panhard bar.

I bet the axle ratio sucks in the 99 housing. 3.08 or 3.23 probley

It is a 3.08, but it is not complete, so I'm going to re-gear it anyways.

Well the splines are all 28 except for some cobras and some rangers. The axles should be good to go. Don't swap the axle sides over either. You will want to swap over all of the brakes lines and the dampener/moose ba*** wont come over either. Standard diff too.

What does this mean? I'm in Houston at an all-week event and have just had a glass of wine (I'm normally a non-drinker) and the "dampener/moose" part does not make sense to me. Is this like Moose and Squirrel?

                      Here is a picture of what the new axle looks like, my question now is;

Will I be able to bolt the rear shocks to this new axle, or am I going to have to cut off the shock brackets and weld on the brackets off of my 7.5?

My plan was to have the new axle pretty much ready to go, so I can just swap them out when my axle finally gives up, or the new one is finished and ready to go into the car.

He means the big hunk-o-mass mounted to the bottom of the 7.5 diff housing

Has anyone used this little gem? Ford Racing M-2810-A it is a parking brake cable that would allow you to use different rear calipers with out Frankenstein'n your E-brake cable setup too bad. I have been debating on going with a 99+ rear brake setup instead of rebuilding or reusing my stock calipers.

Right now I'm just thinking out loud and trying to bounce ideas off a couple people.
