  • Replacement Clutch Specs?

My son has an 84 that is basically stock (for now) and the clutch is done.
I was looking into options for replacement. Thinking maybe get something a lil stronger for future mods, etc.
I found several options, but they show, 8.5, 9 in and even an 11 inch disc..??
Input shaft shows 1 inch and 1 1/16...?
What shoould the stock size input be? Stock Disc size?
What size can you go up to with stock flywheel?
Can I upgrade flywheel and get a bigger disc?

I looked through the threads, found some part numbers, but not sure what I should be looking for.

    Any info appreciated.

    Thanks!
    84 2C Stock for now....

Turbo cars use a 9 1/4" clutch which is the largest that will fit with the stock setup. An 11" setup involves an adapter plate, 5.0 bellhousing/fork, 5.0 flywheel drilled for the 2.3 and of course a 5.0 clutch kit. You will likely also need to customize the downpipe to avoid interference with the larger bellhousing. IMO if you have a relatively stock setup this is completely unecessary. My stock clutch held fine until I started making near 300 rwhp.

For the stock setup you have a few HD clutch options such as RAM, Centerforce, SPEC, and some other. I would personally avoid any puck style clutch disk as they are very "grabby" and not much fun for daily drivers. Some people swear by SPEC, I personally wouldn't buy another one. A RAM HD unit (RAM-88618) would be cheap and probably handle any of you hp needs. But again, everybody seems to have a favorite.

Stick with the stock flywheel, it's well weighted for our motors and a good street piece.

I have a spec in the car now and I wouldn't buy another one.
I just read some comments on another site about the ram kit,
they say it doesn't last. I bought a centerforce (but haven't
put it in yet) I'm hoping it will work out. just my 2 cents.

If not replaced before, the 84 has a 8 7/8 clutch disc and the 85-up has a 9 1/8 clutch disc. The complete matched package for either is interchangeable onto the original flywheels, but if you mix and match a late clutch disc with an early clutch cover, you should be prepared for interference issues. Just order a matched clutch kit and you will be OK.

Thanks to all for the info.
Just so I know, is the Input 1-1/16" or 1"?
          Thanks again.
