  • Power steering rack rebuild service

Guys, most know but some may not that the parts store rack and pinions...especially Cardone rebuilds are absolute garbage, the cars get twitchy feeling on the highway so in a search for a better product I found this company. I've talked to them but I have not used them yet but I thought I would share the link since we are at and beyond the age where we all need help in this area. I plan to give them a shot as soon as I have need to get one done but in the meantime if anyone does give them a try please report back to us. This company uses YOUR rack, not exchanging it for some other rack with unknown history. They are located in Michigan....

They have my rack, and it needs parts that they have NOT been able to source yet. It's been over a year, now.

BUT, because they have my rack, they have measured the 'effort', so know what the SVO high-effort rack feels like.

I hate that it's been there that long but at least they have measured it. What kind of parts do they need? Is it seals or hard parts?

It appears that the jackshaft and pinion are pitted, and the pits go beyond what they can polish out. Those parts are no longer made, so we need a good core for those parts. Sadly, the racks that are made today are dimensionally different, so no pulling parts from them to install in our rack.

Hi I'm a new member and still trying to learn how to navigate through the web site.I contacted one turn about my rack and they wanted $500 before they even looked at it so it a sounded like an expensive rack rebuild if any extra parts are needed. If anyone knows where I can buy a rack that would be great I'm having trouble finding the correct rack

Welcome! As far as rebuild services, Turn One is the only show in town, AFAIK. They are good at what they do, I've heard from several who have used their services, purchased their parts, albeit none for the SVO. They take YOUR rack and rebuild it.

Your only other choices are to buy another unit, which is hit-or-miss. Additionally, I'm told that while they bolt up, they're not an exact match. The hardest thing to match is the ratio and effort. The SVO is unique in effort. Most of the available racks, even the 'quick ratio' ones tend to make the car steer like a Fairmont. Three companies I know of that have new racks available are:

Late Model Restoration. They claim to have stock for the 5.0 Mustang, which will be a different ratio and effort. It looks to be $~300.
Flaming River. They claim to have a 12:1 rack, but it looks to be one of the 'metric' racks, and will look little like the OEM. It's also expensive.
Lares. They claim to have a 'fast ratio' unit that's a 10:1 ratio. I have one of these to replace the leaking AGR (that appears to be out of business) unit that's on the car. It hasn't been installed yet, as I have to R&R the heater core before I can start the car to bleed the PS system. It looks to be $~275.

Some elsewhere have mentioned sending the existing unit to Cardone to have it rebuilt, but I don't know what the success rate is for that, or even if it's possible.

There are SEVERAL threads on racks here. Check them out for more information.

Hi thanks for the info. The problem I'm having is the holes on the rack where the ps lines screw in on are different than all the racks I have seen for sale mine are on the top side by side(diagonal) and the racks I look at that are supposed to fit are both on the left side.I bought one and I couldn't get the ps line to start then realized the holes were wrong I don't know if my rack is oem or not but I took the numbers off of it G-14-Gcc-6 Ford and a tag that has spr of 3m 1a.I had a guy try to give me his old rack off of his svo and set me pics even his ps holes are different so I'm not sure what to buy

Late Model Restoration is just selling parts store racks...I DO NOT recommend them.

Cardone....I wouldn't send anything to Cardone if it was the last option on earth! The quality is terrible, the rack is "twitchy" wanting to change lanes and that is if they DON'T lose your parts! They lost a Hydroboost I shipped to them for rebuild...not once but three times and in the end I never got it back...or any form of compensation. I had to go buy another complete car just to get another Hydroboost for my customer. I have also sold Calipers to an Oreilly store in Ohio who shipped their customers calipers to cardone and they were lost...so Cardone is a big bowl of Don't do it.

Looks like we may have to keep looking for another option....

Can you share a picture of your rack so we can do some comparing?

The picture of the dirty one matches what's in our 86. It also matches the Lares unit still in the box. I no longer have the one the car came with, but the leaking replacement that's in it now bolted right up.

Looks like they sent you a rack for a GT. If you go to Rock Auto and look up a rack for a 1986 5.0, they look just like that one.

I just looked at all the Racks on Rock auto and they are all different than what he has under the SVO application.

The dirty one is my rack that came off the car the other is the one from Bap.I looked at the racks on rock auto and all of them look like the rack from Bap not my rack.My question is will it be ok to use the new rack if the ps lines are not in the correct place.I tried to install the one from Bap and I couldn't get one of the lines to start it felt like it was going to cross thread. The housing on mine is metal the new one is aluminum

Yes, I was saying that if you look up a 5.0 rack from 86 on RA they look like what he received from BAP. So I think BAP sent him a rack from a GT.
