  • HR980 rebuild kits

are there any kits out there to rebuild these to support the higher pressures of the newer coolant? I'm pretty sure mine is on it's way out. like I need another expense..

As far as i know the biggest problem is that these compressors are NOT rebuildable. thus the reason to change to a different compressor unit.

yeah, that's what I'm finding..I may get another compressor and go with R12 again. seems the cheapest route.

"But simple low cost retrofits may not give the best cooling performance, and may not even be possible on some vehicles. Any compressor that has Viton seals is not a candidate for retrofit. This includes original equipment compressors such as Tecumseh HR980, some Keihin compressors and some Panasonic rotary valve style compressors on older Japanese cars. On these, the compressor must be replaced."

At one time, I had a few NOS compressor rebuild kits. I have not seen one in a long time. Check with Green Sales. I had a picture of the kit in the parts picture section, but I can't find any of the pictures now.

if it's a picture you uploaded yourself just go to UserCP, then click on attachments at the bottom.

I've found new compressors, but nothing for the HR980 in order to make it work with 134a properly.

          thanks

            Man,

I never new that. wow! Learn something new everyday. I've got 8 pages of pictures posted...But none from the picture parts gallery - I had about 75 NOS part pictures there. Gone, all gone.

Hey, I'm sure I could post them all again?! It might take a while though - Eric, any advice?

I moved all the stuff out of there that was worth moving. I'd just say post the pics as needed.

how about newer compressors that are direct replacements for the HR980..I've searched high and low and can find nothing really. I'm talking about one that will slip right in with the parts already there, not have to replace every single part.

best thing i have found is to go with a newer style compressor and custom made brackets....... Maybe you can ask Jim to source you justa compressor and the brackets, but if i remember correctly you OUGHT to change the condensor as its kind of too small for R134 usage.

Ebay has hr980 NOS for 139.99 but i have always been weary as who knows the condition of the seals. I say, before it totally craps out be sure you don't have any leaks and then change the compressor BEFORE it dies. Less change of FOD to enter the ac system.

Or just ditch it all and save 25lbs off the nose.......

And don't gimmie this crap about it being hot in Austin, i've been there numerous times, Dallas can/will get hotter and HOUSTON tops them all. I definitely could not live w/out ac in houston, but i did it for over a year in Dallas......its not THAT bad. though it sucks

my system is holding pressure very well right now. I found a cracked pressure switch and one of the larger lines had a worn o-ring. Otherwise I replaced and upgraded o-rings on all the other lines with a new liquid line as well. before it would only hold pressure for a day, but I just drove it and it's fine. Mind you, it's only a 20 degree difference from ambient which isn't very efficient, but it will work until it dies. It's suppose to be a 40 degree change. I'll stop by and ask Jim..

                    thanks

How many cans of R12 is needed to recharge a completely empty system? I have 4 cans of this stuff sitting on the shelves.

I bought two of the the NOS compressors off of eBay so far from acpartguys. They provide a "make offer" option and I paid about $90 for each compressor. I'd recommend buying them while you still can. No clutch or pulley but that's easy to install off of any old compressor.
A special socket is required to pull the clutch and then just make sure the clutch is shimmed properly when reinstalled.

going to get one of those compressors and go back to R12. My system right now is still charged, but not cooling very well. it's ok, but not cold. If the outside temp is above 90 or so it's not even worth it to have it on.. lol..

I removed my ac compressor in '96 but I remember that darn clutch would create such a rattle, so I figure that needs to be replaced as well. How much are clutches going for?

                              Thanks,
