  • 84 SVO computer/injector swap

Ive looked thru the archives but i still have a few questions. Im getting ready to change fuel pump, computer(LA3), injectors(brown tops) and install a 3" down pipe. Ive had the computer for a while(pulled from a TC years ago) and i bought the injectors off of ebay, so im not 100% sure that these parts are in working order. Im wanting to install the computer first before changing the injectors so i can try and ensure the computer is serviceable before adding another variable to the equation. (injectors) I dont plan on driving it, just fire it up, make sure its running on all 4 cylinders, that way if after i install the injectors i have any issues i can hopefully pinpoint it as an injector issue.

What i need to know is will it run smooth enough with the LA3 and stock injectors to verify serviceabilty of the computer?

    Thanks

it will run, but not very good. since you're putting them in anyways you might as well install them and fire it up with the injectors anyways. two birds with one stone.

You may want to have them cleaned and checked out before. I used Witchhunter Performance to clean and calibrate mine....sent them eight, and only four were worth using. Not fun to go through all the hassle of the swap to find out they aren't worth the money you paid.

The PO that I bought my 85 from had that setup - LA3 with greentops. It ran well enough to drive it 1/2 a mile home.

Course, it had other wiring issues I have just discovered this past week....be double sure that you do the ECU pinout right, and connect the right wires together to make it run right.

          Yes, it will "run."

But....when you are in open loop (cold start, accel/load, above 3k RPM) it will be running about 15% lean. In closed loop (warm idle, light cruise) the O2 feedback will compensate a little for the smaller injectors to get your fuel mixture somewhat closer.

If you are set on your plans to start it with the green tops, just DO NOT load or boost the engine hard.

Thanks, thats the info i was looking for. I dont mind doing all the work at the same time, but if you do that and there are any problems it can be a mess trying to figure out which component is the culprit.

BTW, does anyone know what the going rate is to have the injectors cleaned and calibrated?

Just give them a shout...was very impressed with documentation and turn around time.

You can also google FUEL INJECTOR CLEANING and get multiple hits. There are a handful of good places in the U.S.
Here are a couple more places:
