  • compression test results and cyl head condition

i did a compression test to see what is causing the engine smoke
hear are the results: #1 120 #2 120 #3 120 #4 50 yup, you read it correct 50!!! . exhaust valve had a chunk missing from it! the clyinder walls have no ridge at all. when the car ran oil pressure was good also. my question is should i rebuild the bottom end or just do a valve job . engine has 143,000 miles on but you would not know it by looking at it. thanks

jeonardo, Those aren't bad readings from my perspective/ I bet you could do a good valve job (good TCoupe valve stem seals) and put it back together! How big of a piece of the valve was missing?/ Did it damage the turbo? Keep us posted>>>>>

120's are pretty normal on these engines cold. The only worry that I would have is what the chunk of exhaust valve did the the turbine blades in the turbo. Who knows maybe you got lucky.

With the NON availabilty of pistons (reasonably priced) for these motors now I would not bore it unless it needed it.

If the clearances are ok the most I would do might be to hone it and use a set of Total Seal Rings (gapless), or just leave the pistons and rings alone and install new bearings and a new "stock" oil pump.

turbo blades look fine bottom end even feels fine, when engine was running it ran good. it had a little skip but, now i know what that was!!! also, bottom end felt really good i could feel it in the throttle as i was reving it up.it felt really strong so, the condition of the bottom end doesn't surprise me at all.

            Valve Springs

jeonardo, Check those valve spring tensions at installed & compressed heights!!!!

why? is this a known problem. the cyl head is going out to be checked .

                Not a known problem....

jeonardo, An ounce of prevention/ worth a pound of cure.
Checking valve springs to make sure the valve train is working properly is easy at this point. Checking compressed height will make sure you have no "float" at higher rpm's.....
This will also help the longevity of the lifters & the cam!
                Good Luck.

                  valve springs

                  Valve springs are cheap.

Why go to all the trouble and effort to fix anything involved and ignore the small details that can come back to bite you? Do things right the first time. Consider your time as expensive.

(Do it now ir do it twice!)
