with the spout connected? you can't set it with the spout in..that has computer timing added. make sure you remove the spout, then set it to 10 degrees base. I assume that's what you're doing and hopefully I just read that wrong. if you have a light on it you can easily tell which way is which by just watching the direction while turning the dizzy.

BTW I had to turn it counter clockwise to get to 10 degrees BTC - going clockwise made it advance ...

didn't check, just loosened the dist bolt and slowly turned it in both directions and observed the timing light.

Going clockwise kept advancing, then went counter clockwise and put it at 10 degrees BTC and locked it down, connected the spout and it went to ~22 BTC

Still trying to hunt down my rough idle though I have now added new wires, O2, plugs, replaced some vac lines, reset FPR to 39 lbs (no vacuum) with the original brown tops in and not much change....

The previous owner had the head rebuilt, new CAM and the block decked and wonder if that is contributing

Need to do a pressure test as well I guess ...

If this was me asking the question, and MikeFleming told me something different than what I had observed, I'd certainly check which way the rotor turns.

I'll check it the next time I get a chance .. I only commented on what I did at the time

Maybe I got it backwards... main thing is that it's in tune now and I appreciate all the help for sure ...

Did a quick visual check this am on the distributor and it does appear the it was rotated counter clockwise... the screw on the right hand side was rotated up, closer to the valve cover ...

Originally the two screws on the cap were at about 4 o'clock and 10 o'clock , now they are about 2 o'clock and 8 o'clock

tonight I will pop the cap off the turn the engine and check rotor rotation and confirm the results ...
