  • Antifreeze and Trans. fluid

When replacing fluids, how much antifreeze, Transmission fluid is needed? I know to use ATF for the Trans but am not sure how much I need to buy. Any good recomendations on antifreeze or is it all the same besides not wanting alcohol or methanol based.
    Thanks Christina

My Hayne manual says to use Mercon ATF fluid in your T5. Normally, I fill mine until the fluid just begins to overflow the fill plug hole. Level should be even with bottom of fill hole.

The book also recommends a ethylene glycol based anti-freeze. That's the kind that can poison dogs if they drink it. I think most name brand antifreeze on the market today will work fine in a clean radiator. I normally fill the entire cooling system with Prestone antifreeze only. As the year progresses, I'll add water to bring it up to level as needed, provided there has not been a large loss of coolant. The neon green color helps to let you know when system is dirty (rusty) or needs replacing (pale green color means to much water added). It is best to change fluid once a year.

    Just my 2 cents.

on transmission, I believe it is either just over, or just under 2 quarts (I'll have to check my manual when I get home to make sure) -- and like he said, fill it until it comes out the fill hole.

I'll have to check the book on antifreze also -- I would recomend using 50-50 mix, instead of all antifreze. 100% antifreze is thick, and hard to move through the coolant passages. it's also more likely to leave deposits.

I think the recomended change time on antifreze is every 2 yrs. That should be fine unless you are in some extremem driving conditions.
also, if you are losing coolant, you have a problem that needs to be fixed. I haven't touched the coolant since the reunion (when I changed thermostats) in October, and the level is still exactly where it was.

I see they have a new anti freeze for older cars and don't know if it is worth trying or not. It seems brand names for anti freeze isn't a big deal.
With the trans. fluid I see a lot of Dexron III. Should I stick with the Dexron II that is recommended or is it replacing the Dexron II?

the dextron III is most likely replacing the II. your book probably tells you II because III wasnt out yet. so III is probably better.
