  • rear main seal part number

I did a quick search and didn't find what I was looking for.
Which fel pro part number do I want to use??? Advance has two part numbers listed.

From a search on TF: Fel-Pro part BS40644 teflon rear main seal.

Check advanced site and the above part is there, cost $19.99, and it is a one piece seal.

Do you have a seal installer? From the TF posts if it is not seated and installed correctly leaks can occur.

dont forget to put a thin layer of grease on the inside diam of the seal when you install it. Putting it in "dry" will cause failure.

        rear main seal part number

Advance has two different Felpro part numbers listed. One is described as an improved design. That is where I am a little confused, should I get the original or the improved one???

I would have them pull both and investigate. Hopefully the 'improved' version is really better.

You can install w/o any real special tools, I just tapped mine in lightly with a hammer till the outer surface of the body was flush with the back of the block all the way around.

To remove the old one, just pop 2-3 small holes around the body with an awl, thread in self tapping sheetmetal screws (not the bit-tip type, just sharp pointed ones since you don't want any stray metal shavings left behind) in the holes and slowly work out the seal using a claw hammer or pry bar. I think I had mine swapped out in under 10 minutes, with everything else out of the way of course. Good luck.

Ted hit the rear main seal install method exactly. Take care not to damage the crankshaft.
While you're in there, go ahead and replace the pilot bearing too.

The teflon Felpro seal is what I prefer, part number is in Frontrow's post.
The pilot bearing part number (at NAPA) is BRG FC65354, make sure you install it with the o-ring toward the back of the car.
Odd, when I took my avitar picture I owned the black SVO...now I own the blue SVO.
