motor mounts

I've been restoring my '84 SVO and recently got the engine started for the first time since I got it a year ago. After watching it idle I'm kind of concerned about the motor mounts. With the engine missing a bit at idle, the mounts are allowing the engine a lot of side-to-side vibration -- much more than I see in my '88 Mustang (also a 2.3 engine).

Are there special mounts for the SVO engine (compared to the conventional 2.3)? Is there a standard for how much movement they should allow? If I have to replace the mounts, can anyone suggest a supplier? In the past I found it nearly impossible to find new mounts for my other 2.3 car. The standard sources (Ford, Auto Zone, O'Reilly's) all said they were unavailable.

Well you aren't alone.. my engine has a lot of side to side movement as well and it idles fairly rough.

Of course, I always thought if your motor mounts were bad it would send the engine forward towards the fan....

If your engine shock absorber thingys are out, you could get additional side to side movement.

Gator mentioned in a previouse post once that you can get motor mounts at Autozone.

I got my motormounts from autozone.. no problems at all..

Went to autozone and the counter guy was no help. Does anyone have the brand and part # I can give autozone to look up, for the shock mounts? Thanks

The Autozone web site list the ones for an '86 SVO as:

Manufacturer: Anchor

Left mount: Part#2481 ~$27

Right mount: Part# 2480 ~$27

Hope this helps. At Autozone you have to tell them to use the Mustang SVO screen. It has its own separate catagory.

I think you need to call Paul at SVPU or Motion Dynamics for the engine shocks.

Can I have more info on this? what are these shock absorber things and how hard is it to put in new motor mounts?

the shocks are something that came stock on SVO's, one small shock absorber on each side of the engine.

The motor mounts aren't too bad to change, I like to do it with a engine hoist, and jackstands, but you can do it with just a jack, and jackstands.

Basically, you take the bolt that bolts to the cross-member off, loosen all the bolts that attach the mount to the engine.

lift the engine (place it on the jackstands), remove the mount, put the new one on, and do the same thing on the other side.

Make sure you have the engine blocked up good while you are under there with your hands!!!..
