  • Best distributor wrench?

    It's time to set the timing. I can't even unplug the spout connector because the lower intake is in the way.

    What's the best way to get the distributor loose to set the timing? That area is so narrow I have no idea how to get it loose. A socket seems the logical choice, but all the ones I have are too tall and bump into the distributor. I was looking at some flare wrenches and such, but nothing seems easy.

    What do you guys use?

    i use a crows foot. if you dont know what that is it's a open end wrench that fits on the end of a socket extenstion. trick little piece

      I was barely able to squeeze a 17mm stubby box end in there. I didn't have a lot of room to turn the wrench, but it worked.

        I use a 17mm distributor wrench. why not use the tool for the job? I got it online for 12.00 plus shipping a few years

          Well, I've always used the same method as Mr. Fleming. It is tedious trying to snake it down in there. Then pulling it out without the socket popping off is another trick. I shorted against that positive lug more than once. I don't have that issue now with my 3G alternator.
          NY Eric, That wrench is $14.50 now, but I'd like to see a pic of it. Might order one.

            I changed my dist bolt to an allen head. I use a 8mm ball head allen socket it is the sweetest

              Be sure to stay clear of the alternator positive lug on the back. Touching that with the extension will ruin your day.
              You can also slide a long piece of heatshrink (double layer is helpful) over the extension to help alleviate the possibility of shorting to the positive lug.

              Electrical tape around the socket & extension will help insure the socket does not come off the extension when you pull it back out.

                I think the socket I'm using is just too fat at the top (it doesn't taper at all).

                This is probably what I'll do. I hate waiting for stuff though, any idea if a local chain carries one?

                  you can also go to that site and search this "VIM Tools 17 mm 12 point Distributor wrench"

                  I do like the shrink wrap idea to cover the wrench.

                    Liquid electrical tape too.....or "End Dip", same thing that is used on other "coated" tools.

                        I just force a Craftsman 17mm shallow well socket on the bolt pushing the hose out of the way. Using an extension of course. Once I am ready to remove the socket a little tilt of the extension left or right and it pulls right out.

                            I'm thinking of rerouting my PCV hose before putting my engine back in the car. Anyone done this?
