  • Big valves and cams

Curious to see who is running big valves, and what cam are you running?

I'm looking at doing it, and seeing if a ranger cam is fine for street use, or should i upgrade. Can't deny what people are saying about boport's cam although we aren't given specs. I can deal with that if people really are getting the gains they say.

    Thanks!

I'm running a mildly modified 2.3 with the MS 237 roller, big valves, and ported head by Motion Dynamics.

The same car used to have a ranger roller in a stock head, with a ported E6. I could punch it at 2K and pull hard to about 5K.

Mike Fleming swears the best stock cam for a stock 86 SVO is the stock slider cam, I can't argue with that.

As Bud said, "search". your won't find your best cam by just asking.

Your best bet is to search turboford since there are alot more people using Boport stuff over there in anything from a SVO to Rangers and T-birds....
I know I have seen dyno sheets were two different guys picked up 24hp at the wheels over a RR and another picked up 34rwhp.However I dont remember which Bo cam they installed.

                Look here: http://www.svoca.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=23

Yeah...that took me about 10 seconds to find.....

You'll want to go to the source if you're thinking about a Bo-Port cam.....give Bo a call and he'll be able to recommend products based upon your goals.

I can search, and I have searched, tons in fact, and i have on three or four other 2.3t sites. The thing is, i'm wondering how big valves and a RANGER CAM work. I can find next to no information on how it does other than people talking about doing it, and not following up. There are really only a few cams out there people are using on street use, so there are few combinations, but no body says anything on how it drives.

Or maybe everyone knows something i don't and go straight to a boport cam or other and don't bother with a ranger roller....

It's a conspiracy to hide information from you. Big valves alone don't offer much benefit in terms of flow so why would the cam matter. There are many other factors besides besides valves which would also factor into cam selection.

Personally I have used the Ranger cam with a worked motor/head and don't recommend it. It makes great vacuum and torque below 4k but is pretty much dead above that. The A237 was a much better match for that combination (valves, chamber, port work, etc.). Currently I'm using a Racer Walsh Turbo cam which according to them was based on overcoming the shortcomings the Ranger cam on a turbo motor. It makes good mid range power and was night and day from the Ranger roller up top. Not tried a BoPort cam but have heard lots of good things.

I am currently running a big valve ported head and ranger roller. Like Fleming said, strong from boost to about 4500 rpm, then it feels like the engine can't breathe enough. Going to a Bo-Port kit as soon as I get a couple of other issues worked out. I don't think the ranger roller gives you any more power or torque - if it does it would be small (maybe a higher torque peak?). Also, I don't know that going to bigger valves is useful unless you port the head - just my opinion though.

I can't compare it to stock, since a lot of other mods (T3/T4, 3" turbo back, FMIC, 65mm TB) happened at the same time. I just believe the car should be doing better above 4500 rpm than it is, given the mods I have.

Once I get a couple of other issues worked out, I will dyno the car. Then put in a Bo-Port, and dyno again. That would be the best way to tell how good (crappy) the ranger roller is.

But that won't be for another month or two, other bills need to get paid.
