  • Anyone use this Alternator upgrade?

    Powermaster 140 in the stock casing?

    Thinking about getting it. What harness upgrade should I get with this (summit has http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PRF-30709/ recommended but it doesn't come with a fuse)

    Also, anything else I should know about upgrading the alternator?

    looks like a standard 140 amp 3g alt. pat has the megafused wire to run between battery and alt; stock harness can be modified for 3g; http://www.rothfam.com/svo/3g/

      Nah its not a 3g alt. Its a one wire application, internal regulated, with internal alternator on/off

      Hmmm trying to find more info, but they say its a direct fit for the SVO.

        Ok got it. You completly disconnect the External regulator from the harness to avoid the Alt dash light.

        Other then that you run the main charge wire directly to the battery. Think I will give it a shot.

          oh, its a 1 wire. didnt look close enough. check with pat, but i think his kit will fit that as well.

          should be fine; if its not, summit has a nice return policy

            Ya I just ordered that, a 6 GA 2ft wire, and a 70A inline fuse.

              My lowest amp fuses for a stock alternator application are 100 amps on a 4 gauge wire. 70 amp fuses would not put up with a bad alternator trio diode. If you bought a 70 amp fuse on a 6 gauge wire, it ain't mine.

                Nah I didnt order from you, but do you got a website? I would rather do it right the first time

                      I have the powermaster 140 on my GT..it's a good alt.. however, make sure you wire the exciter wire up or you will think the alt doesn't work when you fire it up.

                      I noticed that my Powermaster one wire alternator has to be "revved up" to get the alternator to come on. Why?

                      A one wire alternator has a turn on point (sometimes called cut in, which is typically 1200 engine RPMs). This is the speed where the internal sense circuitry connects the battery to the voltage regulator, thereby turning the alternator on. Once the voltage regulator turns on, the alternator will remain on and charging until the engine comes to a complete stop. If the engine idle speed and pulley ratio combination do not allow the alternator to come up to this point during starting, the engine will have to be revved up to turn the one wire alternator on. The sense circuitry in the one-wire regulator can be bypassed to excite the alternator as soon as the ignition switch is turned on. This is called three-wire operation. This means the alternator will not be dependent on reaching a certain turn on RPM.
