  • Cant adjust the TPS voltage below 1.4V

    Hey Guys,

One thing I havent gotten around to fixing on the car yet is the intermittent 2k rpm hang. The car will hang at 2k rpms, and sometimes will come to normal if it tap the gas. It definitly goes away if I turn the car off and back on.

The TPS is at it lowest adjustment point at 1.4V

Possible bad TPS? (not sure if its original or not), or maybe wiring?

Also the correct idle setting is .9V right?

.9v is the correct TPS voltage setting at idle. Also, make sure you have the correct leads connected to the voltmeter (I made a test harness for an '85-86 out of a scrap TPS connector set off a Topaz, works really well). Confirm your voltmeter is working properly by connecting it to a known voltage.

Find an analog Volt-ohm meter, disconnect the TPS from the wiring harness connector, connect the ohm meter to the TPS (without the TPS being connected to the car) and see if the needle movement is smooth as you move the throttle from min to max. If the analog voltmeter movement isn't smooth, you have a bad TPS. I'd be tempted to remove the TPS and test the entire range of the TPS for smooth movement (you won't get the full range of the TPS when it is on the car, but full range of the throttle movement...no, it's not quite the same).
There is a real good "sticky" on setting the idle and TPS on here.
If you plan to make it to the reunion (with or without a car) let me know and I'd be happy to walk you through the TPS adjustment procedure at the reunion.

you can use a round file to slot the hole so it can be adjusted lower.
