  • walboro 255lphHP question

so i have been trying to figure out if i could use the 255lph hp pump that is for the 85's and up for my 84 and i have not found out if i could. i tried searching, but it is either not there or i haven't used the right words in the search. I found this site http://www.walbrofuelpumps.com/ but not sure if it is a good place to buy it from. thanks.

You can use the 255lph pump in an 84 but you need to get a pump bracket from 85 up car to do it. I believe the 5.0L bracket is the same.

Your search on "fuel pump" should return some proper info. I am not completely familiar with an 84 setup, but you likely have a dual pump setup that does require some work to convert over to a single in-tank pump. The dual pump setup uses a lower pressure in-tank pump with a high pressure pump mounted somewhere around the axle. I can say that a 'proper' single pump sending unit would be a Spectra Premium model #FG30A. Do an internet search on that and you will get a lot of hits. Check with SVOCA supporting vendors for purchasing your pump. Another source I have used in the past for pumps is APE. Apparently there are counterfeit Walbro units floating around out there that don't quite match up to the 'real' units, so be careful of a price that is too good to be true. Good luck with your project.

don't waste your time fabricating the bracket.

simply buy a walbro 255HP inline pump. the 84 fuel pump design is better than the 85-86.

well im glad that i posted this thread! =) so the 84 bracket is better than the 85/86? and i have looked on ebay, and i also looked on google for the pump and i got that site. on ebay they said that a reputable supplier can't sell walboro fuel pumps for under $99, thats why i asked if anyone has used them. i also knew that i had the two pumps =) thanks. thanks for all the help.

The 84 and early 85 models used a dual pump setup with the same brackets and equipment.

In late 85 models (or otherwise known as 85.5), the fuel system was changed to a single in-tank fuel delivery system, and the fuel filter was relocated near the axle.

If you want to go with a single, in tank Walbro 255, an '86-'93 bracket is required. You will also have to replace the rail mounted pump with some sort of filter to take up the place of the pump. I have seen it written here where a '93 Ranger filter will work.

Do a SEARCH and take the time to read. There are a lot of good posts on this.

why go through all that trouble when you can just buy an inline fuel pump replacement, and replace that in under 5 minutes?

Not when it comes to it's location as it relates to dual tail pipe exhaust config found on a 85 1/2 & 86 or those who choose to add it ...

First of all, I am not trying to "sell" this option, I am merely explaining how to go about converting to a single, intank system.
I also don't think just adding a 255 lph "inline" pump would work really well, as I don't think the intank low pressure feeder pump could keep up with it for long. Can you recommend where one can even get an inline Walbro 255 lph pump that will work with Ford Duckbill fuel line fittings?

In all reality, adding a 255 lph pump is serious overkill to the stock set up. But, to each his or her own.

Oh, and I am quite sure it takes more than 5 minutes to change the rail mounted pump, providing it's properly bolted in it's bracket and not just hanging there.

Kurt, you are correct on the Ranger filter. The body itself is the same size, but the tubes are longer with the flanges on them being further out, thus being able to bypass the 2nd pump with no problems. Also don't forget the need to cut the resistor wire in the hatch area.

Actually, you splice it with 10 gage wire to ground, but yes, I forgot that step.
