  • The best aftermarket tuner - preferences?

    Guys,

Been on turboford trying to learn all about the Tweecer tuner system on the '85 SVO I bought. Made some progress, not enough to get any work done, but learned a good amount. I've learned I'm not going to use the Tweecer on my '84 though. Seems tweecer is getting old and dated.

Question: My SVO brethren...what tuner system do you guys like best?

I'd like to buy something for my '84 where I can do some de-bugging w/ users on this board.

    Thx,

    -James

James, here is a short post on some tuners. http://www.svoca.com/forum/showthrea...=quarter+horse I have both the pcmx and the quarterhorse. I like the quarterhorse on a laptop and I use a Zietronics Wb with it.

it's not the tweecer that's outdated, it's the crappy free software. use binary editor and it's awesome

I have the quarterhorse and use Speed Density
I had a hurdle to go over getting my wideband to read correctly once I did the tuning went quite easily.

Guys thanks. I really appreciate the info in each response, very helpful. I'm downloading the binary editor now (let's see if I can get that done properly). -just to take a look. It says I have to buy it to get the useable version which is no prob.

'nother question. The guy I bought the '85 from tells me I can move the Tweecer software from his laptop, to mine. Is this true?

I feel like I'm stepping off a bank into a raging river, ugh. I hate learning new software.

I s'pose I'll try to get this '85 running correctly, and then once I know what I'm doing I'll do my '84. I think I'll try the QH after reading about it, good interesting stuff.

I also think I'm going to have to hook up a wideband 02 like the zietronics (thanks for that source Raven) to the '85 and then I'll move it to the '84 when I start on it. No problems there? And there's a lot of stuff to order on their site. I was looking at the 2010 WB sensor and accessories, but I'd take purchase recommendations there as well.

          Thanks a ton! -James

I like the Quarter horse but I use the Ostrich 2.0 and like it but it can't data log, for software you need to buy EEC Analyzer and Binary Editor.

              that's very interesting good info.

-both cars have LA3's, or the seller told me the '85 did, he's a character, so I'll have to check.

So I won't even bother w/ Tweecer from what I'm learning. I just need to get the QH, the BE and EA (I don't know why I need EA, I thought BE was the better replacement?), and install a wideband 02 (something I've alway's wanted!).

And I can get the '85 dialed in with all kinds of learning! Groan.

QUESTION! A "Standalone" is a system like the Holley 950 Commander, and it totally replaces the LA3, and you build a harness and have a whole new engine management system, harness, injectors, sensors, and replace the VAM w/ a MAF???

That seems like a good thing since my wiring harness on the '84 is getting very close to 30 years old...anybody like that route? Is that easier/harder, better/worse than QH?

There was a guy that showed up at the '05 or '06 reunion that ran the Holley Commander and his car though not modded as well as mine was WAY faster...I don't remember his name, or know if he still post's or if he might be available, he was from the Memphis, TN area. The SVO was his daughters, but he'd switch between his tune and hers depending on who was driving. He still around? Anyone know him (if I should go the Holley route)? Can you guys give me some recommends there?

-very appreciative for every reply on here, helping me immensely.

that was Ernie Orwig.. And I don't think we've seen him in a few years.

BTW There's no reason you can't get rid of the vam without a stand-alone....
Really, you can get as fancy as you want with the quarterhorse... and rebuild as much of the harness as you want.

The neat thing about going with the quarterhorse (or any tuner) is, you already have a good usable base to start with. Once you get started programming it, you can do quite a lot with it.

EA and BE work together and neither is a replacement for the other because they do totally different things. The QH is an awesome piece of hardware, Paul Booth and Craig Moates are both great guys!!

I run the QH with BE. The PE definition file and bin will run on ALL SVO EEC's (including the 84 version with small injectors) as well the PF1, PF2, PF3, PK, PK1 from the T'birds and Merkurs. They literally turn into PE's. The only thing I'm not sure of is if the premium switch works but I typically copy all the premium settings into the regular tables and don't run the boost control solenoid so I really don't care.

My 84 SVO is currently running with a TE (84 small VAM small injector from a TC) EEC. It is running the PE bin with 35 pph injectors and a MAF conversion. It runs quite well.

Thanks guys, that's more good info!

Eric, thanks for the Ernie Orwig name. Bummer he's gone, cool guy.

I'll get QH and BE, EA installed on my laptop, and start learning.

I'm still running the 70mm maf and 55# injectors with the moates stuff. Getting 30+ mpg on long trips and enjoy having to tighten the turbo flange bolts every month.
                        Really need to repair that.
James, I have a few things from moates that you may be able to use. I will send it up your way soon..
I'll be waiting on you to work on mine soon too!
Time to clean up the engine bay!

Edit: I saw Bud posted it's in Chattanooga! Really pumped about that! Will def be there.

I've really missed the last several year's reunions and look forward to seeing all you pathetic guys racing your antique 4 cylinder "muscle" cars around a parking lot. Yee haw!
