  • Oil sling from Camshaft Timing Gear

I have not done anything to the cam shaft on my 86. But, after I replaced the timing belt it is slinging oil from the top of the timing gear all over the front of the engine.

Through the search feature I have read about it leaking from the Cam Shaft Timing Gear bolt or the cam seal. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!

did you put some thread sealant on the bolt before installing it ?

I never touched it the timing gear except to put the belt on. I must have loosened it in the process though as I did put a wrench on it to align the timing marks.

Lots of teflon tape in my future. I'll take pics.

Teflon tape works or a high temp, oil resistant liquid/paste sealant too. The oil pressure in the cam's bore can squirt by the tightest cam pulley screw threads if they are missing sealant. First 2.3L I owned I changed the cam seal 3x before I realized that I never sealed the threads...

Ahh...Gotcha. You may want to doosh her down with some cleaner and then run the car a bit to see where the oil is actually coming from. If its coming from behind the "plate" on the gear, or at the bottom of the valve cover, or on the "hump" of the front cam tower.

It was from behind the plate, not from the valve cover. How do you fix that?

On another site I found a post by Navysvo that showed how to install the seal.

I did not have that part

So I took the lens bezel off of my Maglight, turnrd the timing gear around and used the timing gear nut to press the seal into place.

                          Worked like a champ!

I also remembered to put at least three wraps of teflon tape around the cam shaft nut. Started it up and no leaks. Now all I have to do set the timing again and replace the rag joint that broke last weekend....car is getting on my nerves.

I used a piece of PVC pipe for a seal driver. I have a few different sizes made up.
