  • Stumbling issues

Hello all, want to get some ideas before i jump into buying an SVO. Father owned an SVO when they were new, but only had it for 5-6 years. Now my buddy has one, wants to sell it and I've been seriously considering. He has been having some issues though. First off a couple of years ago the turbo let go, he had it rebuilt, but since then he says that it hasn't run quite right. The car seems to stumble as its coming up to a stop, and sometimes dies. Generally it runs well other than that. Fuel filter was replaced, plugs, wires, cap was replaced. The guy before him installed an MSD box, but it looks like a drunk monkey wired it and he was too afraid of getting rid of it. VAM was also replaced. He is running an open downpipe and also has a mbc. I've been thinking it through and have kind of figured something fuel related, hung injector, fpr, or pump. I've never gotten a fuel pressure reading, but it's really the only thing that make sense to me. Wanted to get your opinions before I dive into and buy the car if it's going to be something detailed and very expensive.

Take that MSD box off, and throw it... most likely will fix most of your problems.

    If it's an 84, it has 2 fuel pumps, if it's an 86, it has 1, in-tank.

You really need to put the gauge on it, and drive it, while you can see the gauge.
If the pressure raises 1 psi, per psi of boost, and holds steady, the fuel pressure is fine.

It is an 84, so is it 2 pumps inline?

Yes pri it has two pumps.

Not to start anything, but, I know everyone doesn't wanna answer the same question over and over but, it seems everyone is quick to say use the search feature. If that's the case then why not just have a Svoca website with nothing but a big search box? I understand searching helps a person learn but sometimes a person doesn't always have time to search thru pages and pages of Info looking for a answer.

No disrespect Eric just voiceing my opinion.

I used the search feature, but it was not my friend.

I spent the last 2 days, waiting for my activation, searching old threads about idling and WOT issues, but nothing like what I am trying to describe.

A lot of times the search gets cluttered and makes it difficult to find what ya need. We really need like a repair database.

Yeah most of the forums, especially vbulletin, have odd search parameters. It's really hard to get through a lot of them. There are a few here and there that are pretty good, but I am not a huge fan of the vbulletin search

Stumbling when you come to a stop is related to the IAC, base idle and TPS settings. Also, 84s are natorious for wiring insulation crumbling and falling off causing gremlins to appear. You say you replaced the plugs and wires, but with what? Get some motorcraft stuff to start from a sound basis.

I think they were NGK plugs, which i would say is a push with motorcraft plugs, and Bosch wires, which I would say aren't quite as good as motorcraft, but shouldn't too much of an issue yet. I will go through and replace them in time, but the problem got neither worse nor better after the plugs and wires.

TPS might be the first thing I would replace, back track the wiring, and route around and see if any woodland critters have made a nest in the harness.

Too late, VERY disrespectfull.. I found 10 threads within 30 secs that explain every piece of the 2 pump system, and how to convert it.

Simple, USE the search feature, or leave.
If I need to just start deleting threads, then I will.
If you cant show a little respect to the people that have spend days typing in all this stuff, by spending 10 minutes to search through it, then I have no problem saying, You're not the type of person we are trying to reach.

I have been around automotive forums of all kinds for a long time. I have never seen someone so upset about the prospect of a one-word answer. I wasn't asking for a detailed explanation of the fuel system, just the fact that it was inline or in-tank or the combination. I was on my phone, and trying to read through thread after thread on my phone is not possible, and sometimes I kind of assume people like to respond, but apparently around here that is not the case. And I really am curious at the type of person you are trying to reach, if you are only catering to experts, why have a forum at all when everyone already knows the answers. Good forums have experts and dumbies, because the dumbies ask the stupid questions that the experts can answer and create a database of knowledge for all to see experts and dumbies alike.

Wow Eric, chill out I was just making a comment. I'm sure everyone knows about the search feature, its only recommended 100 times a day. I don't think I was disrespectful to anyone.

Please stop trying to explain how the world works, I'm pretty sure I have a good grip on it.

Someone who is mature enough to spend a few minutes looking through the years of data that's already been gathered, and not say, well I don't care about that, I want someone to tell me the answer now.
It shows what kind of person you are, and it shows respect, or disrespect. WHAT you DO shows more about the type of person you are, than what you say.

I suggest we get on with the SVO tech here, becasuse this conversation won't continue any further.

Wow, incredible how this conversation has turned into a hot mess! As for the search feature, I use it, when on my PC, but when I am on the site from my iPhone and try to the search feature from it, it does not work. Also, I have gone to the SVO links and found alot ot dead one, so nothing is perfect! Please stop this pissing contest and get on with it!
