  • What is the "SPOUT" connector?

I'm new to the forum and the original owner of an '86 SVO, VIN 1FABP28T3GF162636. I'm seeing a lot of acronyms in the forum which is great if you know what they are. I need to check the timing on my SVO. Most posts reference disconnecting the SPOUT. What is it?

I've recently pulled my SVO out of mothballs after 12 years and this forum has been very helpful in getting it going again.

    spark in out

it's a plug or connector wire in the TFI wiring. with the SPOUT inserted or circuit closed the computer adjusts timing. With the SPOUT removed or circuit open, base time is set and computer is out of loop.

That was fast! In my Chilton's it says to disconnect the single white (or black on some models) wire connector near the distributor. I assume that is the SPOUT. I just took a look and the black connector closest to the distributor is up next to the upper intake manifold. It has a few red wires in the bundle.

The wire should be yellow and comes off the TFI wiring on the distributor.

          I love pictures.
Yours might be in a different location... still in the factory location on it's plastic mount, but the yellow wire from the distributor is short and the connector cannot be that far away.

            Aren't there different styles ???

What year is shown - should we show the "plug" style for him?

Yes! The 86 has a different style plug but in the same location.

This one is on my 1984 SVO.
                Well now I know!
I thought it was the same plug on all the SVOs.
                My bad.

Is this it? If so how do you disconnect it? Pull the handle-like end away from the body? On 25 year old parts I hesitate to just start yanking.

That looks like a Pill-plug. Pull the handle!
                    Pull it!
(wiggle it side to side has you gently pull on it)

I need to pick up a wrench to adjust loosen the distributor. Is it 1/2 or 9/16?

stock, it's 17 mm, a lot of people replace it with either a 13 mm head bolt, or a allen head bolt. that makes it easier to get to.

With more info WE can point you towards the correct order and things NOT TO DO ! (which is more important that what you think you need to do)

Without a bit of back ground info on last uses and what you know about it / what you are hoping to do to it today - you are going to be posting I did - this and this and this NOW what do I do!

Actually it is SPark OUTput. The SPOUT circuit travels from the EEC towards the TFI. The signal determines the ignition timing of the next plug in firing order.

                              Timing explained:

                              1. PIP signal goes through the TFI module to the EEC for advance or retard adjustmants.

                              2. SPOUT signal goes from the EEC to the TFI

                              3. The TFI opens primary circuit to control spark timing, and switches primary closed

                              4. If the TFI module does not receive a SPOUT signal, it times ignition directly from the PIP
