  • Engine Cooling Fan Control Problem

I have melted the engine cooling fan control in my 84 SVO. This is a printed circuit board module, part number E2BB-8C609-A10. The printed circuit board can't seem to handle the current. I have now melted two of these, and this time it melted beyond repair. The wire harness plug also melted, but I can still get one of those from Ford. The control is no longer available from Ford.

Has anyone else run into this problem? If I can find a replacement, how do I keep this from happening again? Has Ford made any modifications or is there a service bulletin, etc. on this? Any suggestions on where to find a replacement?

    Thanks.

This has been discussed before in other threads. You can do a search to find it.

It is probably time to replace the fan motor. It is probably drawing to many amps. That's what I had to do.

The other thing you can do is install a relay that isolates the current drawn by the fan motor from the interior circuitry. The proces would be similar to what people have done for the fog lights.

The first thing to do is check the number of amps that the motor is drawing.

      Fan control?

      Hello,
The fan control melted because the fan it self is bad and is pulling to much current to turn it! That is a auto parts replacesment for about $25.00. Go new not used believe me it will be better! the fan control relay is still avaliable thru Ford but the price is like $49.00 go the route of dial in at spvu (Paul Becker) for about the same for much better quality and will cool car after car is cut off!You will be very happy with it and stay away from those wires your car will burn to the ground! Pull the guts out and use the shell to hide what was there and keep it from hanging down bay your leg! Hope this will help you out? Jeff Dunevant

It's available in a harness repair kit, different number

Comes with a new harness connector, too.

        Motorcraft # RR-18
        Ford # E7ZZ-8B658-B

I went the adjustable route -- and got the controler from SVP.

it is much simpler, and I can control when the fan kicks on.

            Eric,

Do you still need the TRW switch/relay for the A/C cycling? How does the setup from Paul work with the A/C?

            Just curious?

              Switch for fan!

It has its own power source from the battery so when you get to 180 degrees it kicks the fan on so when the A/C is on if the engine gets to 180 it will come on! So no you do not need the old relay, all parts are in cluded in the kit! It is so much better and safer too! You will be glad you got it. Jeff

well -- you could set the fan to kick on when the AC is on if you wanted --

the fan controler has 3 terminals -- one is a "instant on" switch -- just ground this wire, and the fan will kick on --

so if you were to search down the wire that causes the fan to kick on when the AC is on -- you could even have it do that --

you can pull power from where ever you want -- I pulled mine straight from the battery. -- the other thing I like about this kit -- that I don't like about some of the others is where the thermostatic control goes -- some kits have a "button" you push into the radiator -- I don't like these!!

this one has a copper sensor that you route inside the top radiator hose -- it gives a very accurate temp, and can kick on when you need it.

                  Eric and everybody-

If you go the aftermarket controller route and do away with the Ford controller, does that mean that the fuel injection and ignition won't compensate any more when the air kicks on? On my '84 (and I don't know about other years) the computer kicks in some more fuel and may bump the timing a littel when the compressor is on, to keep the idle up. I con't remember if that wiring is related to this fan control module.

                  Thanks.

the idle bump is provided by a soloniod on the passenger side of the engine compartment -- there will be no change in that circuit.

there is no change in timing, or anything to do with the fuel injection system.

the computer has no idea that the A/C is on -- it is all mechinical and vacume operated.

I just think that you should check all the parts "sensors" that make the fan come on...I've been working on a 85 "Bens" and it had a bad TRW switch... the reason the TRW burned out was it had a bad coolant temp switch that cause the fan to stay running.

hey Rich -- I know what you are saying -- but replacing that fan controler with the aftermarket just makes things so much simpler -- the wiring harnes goes from 10 feet (all the way under the dash, back to the radiator of 20 year old wire) to a 2 foot 2-wire harness. -- you now have 2 componets to troubleshoot -- not 4 -- if you have problems, and it's adjustable -- I always thought the stock fan kicked on too late anyway!!

This is one upgrade I think should be done on all driven svo's

heck -- I probably have 2 of those trw boxes one on each of my svo's maybe I should dig them out and sell them
