    How About This One

    OK
Is THIS the fan kick-on sensor?
We are looking straight down on the (dirty) lower intake between 2 and 3.

      nope

That is the water temp sensor that runs the gauge on your dash. The fan sensor is righ below your knock sensor on the lower intake. at least on the 86.

          Fan Sensor

If you are looking to replace it, the SW501 sold by Autozone comes on about 15 degrees sooner than the Ford unit. For about $12.00 you can't beat it!

              Confused

Lets try this one more time.
              1. There is a sensor in the top of the lower intake between cyls 2 and 3 and this is the coolant temp sensor with input to EEC (whats EEC) (?)...not to the guage???? (two wires)
              2. Upper sensor on rear of lower intake just below mating surface with upper intake? This is the knock sensor?
              3. Just below the knock sensor and slightly inboard in to lower intake? Is this fan kick on sensor? (two wires)
              4. Yet another sensor, this one under the oil pressure sending unit IN THE BLOCK? I have not seen this one yet but I'll look harder tonight. Does this one screw in from the port side or from the rear of the engine? And is the only one of these sensors with one wire?
Does anyone have GP Sorenson part numbers on the right SVO parts here? My local Advanced has stock in this company so thats "their" brand. Trouble is there are usually more than one number listed for 86 SVO. And they don't look the same all of the time. And I have an 85-1/2 to boot!
              Thanks

Chris, let me tell you this from experience. When ordering parts from the local parts stores, just tell them that the SVO is an 86. The books they have seldom if ever list any 85.5 SVO parts correctly, and you're likely to end up with parts for an 84-85 instead of what you wanted.

1 -- YES! EEC is the computer that runs your car (in the passenger side kick pannel)

2- YES that is the knock sensor (or KS you may hear it refered to)

                  3- yes!

4- yes -- it is on the drivers side of the block, mounted almost exactly like the oil-pressure sending unit, only it is about 6 inches lower.

I have to say I am sorry ahead of this == but , I usually refer to advance as retard-- they NEVER give me the right part unless I walk in and hand it to them.

I have excelent luck with Auto-Zone

                      The $64,000 Questions

Are BOTH coolant temp sensors the same part number? I have one form Advanced and it looks like a plug connector with a brass threaded "cone" on the inside. Both Advanced and Auto-Zone only list ine item. Perhaps the other is called something else?
And Advanced list two sensors for the fan switch. I have attached a pic of both, and I assume its the one on the right?
What a pain in the neck I am being......sorry!
ALL of your input could not be anymore appreciated!

I think it is the one on the left with the threaded end for the push on connector

                            not exactly --

                            mike said
ALL (let me repeat - *ALL*) computer inputs have a minimun of two wires

the computer inputs DO have 2 wires ...

the only one that goes to the computer is in the middle of the lower intake, and it does have 2 wires.

Well the Ford parts guy I woke up said the two coolant sensors (computer and gauge) are the same part number so I bought another one. And Ford no longer makes the fan kick-on sensor. So I went next store and ordered one at Advanced. I'll be yanking all of these sensors out this weekend and then I will see whats' what!
