  • MAP Sensor Vacuum Line

    Dumb question but does the MAP sensor on the 86 SVO need to be connected to the vacuum system? If so, is it connected to the vacuum line tree on the firewall on the drivers side? A couple years ago I pulled the engine from the car to do some work on the engine and thought I took enough photos to help me put everything back together. Unfortunately I lost many of the photos and am now wondering if I hooked up the MAP sensor correctly. Currently the engine is hard to start, runs rough and stalls. I have already tested and adjusted the throttle position sensor, replaced the idle air control valve since the engine originally had a fluctuating idle and the valve was sticking, even after cleaning it.

    it is NOT a MAP sensor.. it's a BAP -- Barometric Atmospheric pressure sensor ...

    VERY VERY common to find an SVO with a hose plugged into that!

      As Eric noted, our cars don't measure the manifold pressure, the BAP sensor is there strictly to let the EEC know the atmospheric/altitude conditions and adjust accordingly. It only has an electrical connection.

      I remember a magazine article that had the SVO vs Dodge Daytona turbo and the the Daytona was WAY off its published performance due to the high altitude test location where the SVO compensated for it with its BAP. The scribe noted that the SVO had an 'unfair' advantage with the BAP setup over the Daytona's system. I would have to argue we had a 'better' system that wasn't as effected by altitude.

        Thanks for the feedback. What's frustrating is the part number, "E6EF-12A644-A2A" is repeatedly referred to as a MAP sensor on the internet, like this site: https://partinfo.org/ford-e6ef12a644a2a/. At least I now know not to try to plug a vacuum line into it.

          Well, very true, the two terms are virtually interchangeable based on how they are used. This type of pressure sensor is typically used as a MAP sensor, but Ford had other ideas and used as a BAP sensor...just another 'odd' thing about our turbo 2.3L cars.

          I believe Ford put a little 'cap' of sorts on the inlet to prevent the urge to put a hose on it, as shown below. The inlet should be left open and clear.

            it's likely the same sensor, just measuring different 'locations' ...
            which is why the part number matches.

            and don't believe everything you read on the internet
