  • Sheared distributor drive gear

Dorman says they don't make one. Lots of Ebay sellers strongly imply that the part number DG-3 is a Dorman product. I've sent a message to one of them. Anybody know about this or another aftermarket source? Ford says the gear and the distributor assy itself are discontinued.

Just to clarify, the auxiliary shaft has the gear to drive the distributor and oil pump. You are looking to replace this and the gear on the distributor? First do you know what caused this failure? Is either your oil pump or distributor seized? Anyway, generally you want to replace the gear and the shaft because those gears develop a wear pattern during break in, but without new parts, you can't. Next best is get a used shaft and distributor out of any 2.3L or 2.0L before it went distributorless. You can take the gear off the distributor, I think this was fitted with a roll pin you can drive out and refit to your SVO distributor. I do see several used auxiliary shafts on Ebay and new cam gears. You be in it for $200. Otherwise go scrounge a yard for a used engine to take the parts. Literally this same aux shaft and dist gear can be found on 2.3 Pintos and 2.0 Rangers. I was an engineer at Ford on the 2.3L from 1978-86.

Thanks very much. I'm ordering the 61ZK76R (after I verify that the gears are the problem and not the timing belt).

Good luck with the repair and what you find out is the cause
