  • Mustang fuel injection - history

Hi all - I've "bragged" that the SVO was the first fuel injected production Mustang but I'm not sure that's totally accurate. Anyone know?

From what I can find 1984 was the first year for Mustang fuel injection but it may be a three-way tie between the SVO, Turbo GT for MFI while the 5.0's had TFI with automatic transmissions but remained carbureted with the manual for 1984 and 1985. The base 2.3 remained carbureted in 1984 at least (I had one). I'm not sure about the V6. The V8's went to MFI in 1986 both auto and manual.

Does that sound accurate? To get finer grained than that would need to figure out between the three Mustang options available with fuel injection which shipped first in 1984.

At minimum, the 5.0 crowd are wrong in saying 1986 was the first year for MFI since the SVO and Turbo GT both had it two years earlier.

According to Hemmings, Ford first put a Central Fuel Injection (CFI) system on the 1980 Continental: https://www.hemmings.com/stories/art...fuel-injection

Yeah, I thought the turbo Pace Car had FI, but don't remember that far back, and couldn't find any verification. Had a neighbor who had one, and I really liked them back then. I was more into GM F-bodies then, so had no room for one.

There were 83 RS Turbo and GT Turbos with the same motor as 84s. Only a few hundred total, but they were produced. I'm sure Fox Chassis will be along shortly to give you those numbers from his registry.
And don't forget there were 84 RS Turbos

The 79 turbo 4's were a draw through carb setup with the turbo on the driver's side. I had one of those for 29 days as my first car.

I believe the 83 turbo 4's were the first Foxes to receive FI, at least that is what I seem to remember.

Ok, but it was the 2.3 that had it first in a Mustang. I wasn't sure if the GT Turbo started in 83 or 84 but that would definitely make it the winner of my question.
