Try to line up the yellow dots (pinion yoke and drive shaft). Might as well check the pinion nut while you are under there. I found mine not too tight. Grab a long screw driver to hold the drive shaft while breaking the bolts loose on the drive shaft.

            Al. drive shaft

            Talk about serendipity!
I mentioned to a buddy that I had posted this message and that 'the' fix seems to be the aluminum DS. His reply:"my brother used to have a 5.0, and he left the aluminum DS in my garage, do you want it?".
Later that same day, I went by to talk with my former boss about a part-time job at his new place of employment (a salvage yard), during the tour of the yard I spotted a '93 GT. Upon closer inspection (lifting the hatch) guess what was lying in the cargo area? That's right, an aluminum DS. He told me that it wasn't even listed in the inventory and that if I came back in about two weeks he would have a 'very good price' for me.
Rarely do have any kind of luck, but sometimes............

              To tighten / loosen bolts

Another way to tighten and loosen the driveshaft bolts is :

Jack up car and let rear end hang.
With car in neutral rotate tire until bolt is at bottom / exposed.
Pull up on emergency brake and loosen / tighten.
Repeat until all bolts are loose / tight.
Also be aware when sliding out the old driveshaft from the trans that some fluid may leak out so have a pan / bucket ready. This is also a good time to change your trans fluid if you can't remember the last time it was changed. The Mustang T5 style trans uses automatic trans fluid NOT GEAR LUBE. Also when installing the new DS be sure to wipe the yoke ( inside yoke as well ) with fluid before inserting into the trans. My $0.02 worth. One other thing... If you really feel like it you could change the rear end gear lube at this time... And purge all that old brake fluid... Rotate the tires... Oil could stand changing...

Is there any opinion on which of the two aluminum driveshafts is preferred?

They're both the same part number, just different vendors.

Is there any value in the keeping stock driveshaft in the basement? I'm gonna order the aluminum one tomorrow and I don't really care to keep the old one hanging around if it is of no significant value.

                    Oh Yeah, forgot to ask....
Will there be any noticeable difference in performance? Just curious.

no real reason to keep the old one -- theres nothing special about it --

Performance -- you may notice a little -- lighter rotating mass ---

you will gain in acceleration, but loose a bit of uphill speeds
