  • Underhood electrical

    Thinking of getting an 84.

Deal is that it has been in storage for about 9 years. The wiring under the hood is dry rotted, and been rat fod.

I love these cars, want to return it to its glory, etc. etc..

Is there a disconnect at the fire wall, so that I could just replace the harness from there? Will I have to completely rewie the whole thing? Will a wiring harness from another mustang work?
Can I get a harness from somewhere?

I figured that this is the right place to go to get a respnse to this question...

    Please help!

    so was mine

I had to replace each one of my sensor wires and most of the other on the engine. I unwraped the harness one by one and put the ones off a tc that I have for a doner. Heat shrink and soilder the wires together. used 3m heat tape to get back in to shape.
Not the prettyest way but no more bare wires.
Time to clean up the engine bay!

Not exactly the answer I wanted, but sort of what I expected..

I would pass on the car, but I bought it originally in 1988, drove it as a second car to my 1973 Mach 1. Went on the first date with my wife in it. Put it in storage when I went to Deser Storm in 1990. Put it in storage when I was in college from 1993 to 1997. Sold it to my brother in 1998. He drove it from 1998 to 1999. Then put it in my dad's barn.

He now needs money, so here I go...

I'm sure I will be back, asking a lot of questions.

      Thanks.

Wire rot is fairly common with these cars, which I'm sure is attributable to several factors (cheap *** ford!) which we wont go into. Non the less, its common.

I've had to replace large sections of my 84 harness, I also used a 87/88 turbo-coupe harness for the donor. A book you may find very helpful in your re-wiring mess is The EEC-IV handbook by Allan Slocum, its available from his website (for ~$13) http://www.merkurencyclopedia.com/
One main thing useful is it will show all the pin-out variations for the SVO and turbo-coupe harness (at least for the EEC). As others have said, the additional wiring harness (lights, etc) should be able to be sourced from another mustang, my guess is that an 87-93 GT harness (has a similar light setup as well provisions for fog lights) would be a good candidate. I will be doing this on an 83 GT-turbo mustang and used a donor section from the same turbo-coupe I also got the EEC harness from. It will take a bit of footwork but obtaining the ford schematics for the donor harness would be ideal, if its taken from a another turbo-ford car there is a good possiblilty it is on GT350R's website (do a search for 20th Anniversary Mustang and his will pop up).

          Hope all that helps!

Well I actually got approval from the wife to move forward on this little escapade..

I think it had something to do with the fact that we went on our first date in that particular car sixteen years ago.

So I am sure I will be asking a double *utt load of questions.

So thanks for your responses and I will be getting that book.
