The one on my 1988 Mazda MX-6 was chambered and used sound canceling techniques to muffle the exhaust note. It also had a resonator with sound deadening material such as fibreglass etc. to help the main silencer.
Many stock mufflers use the sound redirection/cancellation technique. Flowmaster uses this technique to make retarded sounds. I'd rather stick a baseball card in my bicycle spokes.
