  • Blue/white smoke while cruising... missing too.

Well, As if I needed more problems on top of my wrecked Bronco...
Last night on the way home, I noticed my oil pressure was low. I stop and check the oil, and it's low. Get some cheap oil to get me home, and then go get some good stuff.
I drained it, and refilled with Mobil 1... Daughter distracted me, and I spilled some on the exhaust manifold. I figure I'll burn off what I can't get to.
This morning I leave, and sure enough, it was smoking. I figured it'll stop soon. Nope. kept smoking. Halfway to work, I pull over, and realize the smoke's coming out the tailpipe. Uh Oh...
My oil pressure is still pretty low. It used to ride straight up in the middle. Now it's barely in the normal range, and falls below at higher RPM's. So I baby it to work, trying to keep the oil pressure up.
It backfired a couple times, and is missing badly. Seems to be running on 2 or 3 cylinders. I'm not hearing any death knocks or rattles, so maybe that's good.
The engine has about 30,000 miles on it since rebuilt.
At that time, it got a motorsport graphite headgasket, crower cam, new springs, valve seals, rings, bearings, honing, and all new gaskets, etc.
I have no oil leaks and the antifreeze doesn't seem to have any oil in it. I don't think it's a blown head gasket.
I'm thinking I bent the driveshaft for the oil pump, and, as a result of low oil pressure, may have damaged the rings or something...
Any sugestions on where to start? I pulling the distributer out at lunch to check the shaft.
I just pulled the distributer, and the shaft appears fine.
I searched this site, and turboford, and it seems like it might be the turbo seal...
Although, I don't recall what type of valve seals I used when rebuilding the head. I did not have the internet then, and probably used whatever came in the gasket kit.

    boy... awefull quite today...
I pulled the intercooler off, and pulled the plugs. Oil in the intake, and baked onto the plugs.
I ordered a new PCV valve and spark plugs and should get them tomarrow.
    i'll post an update.
    Thanks for the replies

try to see if there is oil in the intercooler that would narrow it down to the turbo or the valve cover breather. you could also plug off the pvc hose and run the engine to see if it clears up. You might check
take off the hose on the in side of the turbo look for oil. I had a bad valve cover breather the oil dumpped in the inlet elbow.

Flash! if the turbo seal went bad in a big way you would loose oil pressure, the sending unit is in the same fitting as the turbo oil feed line. if the oil level is going down it seems it would be a oil pressure leak.

Well, got the pcv replaced, replaced the distributor, and cleaned the plugs off. (i have new ones, I just wanted to burn any remaining oil out with these.)
It's sitting running idling fine right now, and has almost stopped smoking.
i'm gonna get home, and if it stopped smoking compltely by then, I'll replace the plugs and set the timing. It's just set by ear right now.
Hopefully this is all that is wrong!
Thanks for everything, and i'll post if it's fixed for good or not tomarrow.

            Sad Sad day...

Well, so much for optimism... Got home fine, but after letting it cool, I started it to check the timing, and another smoke show.
Turned it off, and pulled the O2 sensor out. It's the turbo... The O2 sensor is coated with oil, and it's practically dripping out the tailpipe. It's got a bad seal, and oil is getting into the exhaust and the intake...
Time for a rebuilt one. Guess I can't complain considering I put it together from two bad turbos and got 8 years and 30,000 miles out of it. Wish it woulda lasted another 2-3 weeks though!
SVO is parked for the winter. It's going to miss the two events that I look forward to most each year. The SVOCA Reunion, and our Putnam Park track event... I'm bummed...

So, if i'm preregistered, and am there, even if the car isn't, do I still qualify for door prizes? I could use that turbo now!
